Seal installation tips?

I read on here or somewhere about people using pop can material, plastic cup material, or electrical tape on splined shafts for oil seal installation. My buddy who does heavy duty mechanics just uses grease. My service manual talks about thin metal sleeves yet of course I don't have those specialty tools. So what tips can you suggest to try to ensure a seal does not get damaged when sliding it over a splined shaft?

You've named the ones I use.

Some times a special sleeve/stretcher can be made if you have access to a lathe, if there is enough room.

There are situations where there must be a means to get a seal past a sharp edge, otherwise it will cut or flip the seal edge.

When I have to replace a seal on the rear axles of a tractor like a Farmall H or M I buy some sheet protector sleeves. The kind you get at the office supply store. They are very thin and flexible. I wrap the axle with them, grease it up and slide the seal over the them. After the seal is in position I just pull the sheet protectors out. This work real well when you have an axle that is 60+ years old and 18" long. So far I have done about a dozen of these and no leaks.

The last time I needed to do that I used a balloon, I have also used the thin nitrile gloves and clear tape. How about a condom

I thought of a condom for valve guide seals but then I found the little plastic thingy that protects the seal from the stem.
