Snow blower shear pins.

Our son has a 8 hp 28 inch Ariens snow blower, and it needs a shear bolt in one of the augers, and he can't find the owners manual. I would think they should be gr 2, they are 5/16. What do you think? Thanks!

I have almost the same machine for the last 45 years. The shear pins look to be a grade 2 5/16" bolt with two sections (lined up with the inner shaft edges) that are turned down to 1/4" diameter where they are supposed to break. I just go to TSC and buy 1/4" grade 2 bolts to put in the hole. Sheared a lot over the years (usually when I inhale a branch hidden in the snow) with never a problem.

I bought a new Craftsman snow blower this past spring when my local
Sears store closed. GREAT deal, by the way.

It came with 2 extra shear pins. I would need to check to confirm but, IIRC, they are aluminum.

If these are what they look like this Home Depot has them in a three pack for under $ 7.00.

Just make sur3 to never never ever use a regular or hardened bolt. You will find out how much 5hat $125/150 auger tranny costs. List price.

Let me add that I have a White (MTD) blower and have picked up a stone that wedged between the auger and housing. Shear pins didn't help, it blew the worm gear housing apart. It happened TWICE. Got replacements from M&D Mower and Appliance for about $60 less than the dealers.

Wow just when you think the correct part should do the job. Did you try useing a couple of aluminum rods instead. A friend of mine greased the two shafts inside of the augers so they can't bind.

OK guys. Since this came up I took these photos last week. Do you want to scream or laugh at this one. Looks like the same goofy gear box with a plug on top but do you really think this is going to make it through cleaning up the first snow fall? Out front of depot. Notice......it doesn't say anything about belts slipping or anything else. I think some engineering member is a little off his rocker.

You shouldn't take a chance on wiping out the gearbox by not using the correct shear pin.

You can Google search for the snow blower model# and see if you can download the manual. My daughter's Ariens didn't come with a manual but I got one off the 'net free.

On my way up to the checkout counter from the bolt bins at Tractor Supply yesterday, I literally tripped over their snow blower parts display, which had packages of the correct shear pins properly displayed.

Granted a pound of bolts is cheaper up front, but the shear pins may be cheaper down the road.
