Square Nuts Socket

Anyone know where you can get sockets for the old square nuts I have a bunch of cultivator feet with them and the six point don't work.

12 point sockets one or 2 sizes bigger then the wrench size will work most of the time

My square (actually 8 point) sockets are Mac and Snap on. But I imagine a little searching (internet, or local) would find a handier source.

Sears did have true square nut sockets years ago. They still might. If you have a Sears hardware anywhere near you then check them out. I still find 5hem when I dig through the tools for sale at flea markets. I am so lucky to have two of the largest flea markets on the East Coast right in my back yard. One is 15 min. The other is 45 min. Also check Ebay. Just for giggles look up this number 172298932477. That is a square nut socket.

P.S. if you are really desperate and you know the sizes you need , I could look this weekend if it doesn't get tooooooo cold. The flea markets are starting to wind down for the season but Sunday should be in the low 50s. They usually are 1/4 3/8 1/2 and some 3/4 and 1 inch stuff. Don't hold my feet to the fire but on good days all kinds of stuff can come out of the woodwork.

Bought a bunch a couple of years ago at swap meets. 8 point ans am thinking Craftsman. Use them all the time. Just wish they were impact rated.

My 8-points are craftsmen. I think 3-4 of them came with one of those tool-kits with some assortments and a plastic case.

I use 12 point sockets on square nuts too. I have one or two eight point sockets in the S-K brand. I think craftsman still makes eight point sockets.

I bought a set of Craftsman square nut sockets on ebay a couple of months ago.

$17.95 with free shipping

Mine are a mix of Snap On, Mac, Napa etc the ones up to 1" are from Snap on and the larger ones bought as needed from where ever. Should not be hard to find, from tool people

Wright makes really cool sockets that will work on a hex or square nut for the same size bolt.

I got a set of 8 Point sockets from McMaster years
ago. Work great on square heads. Don?t think they
were very expensive.

Once in a while the 12 point will work but most of the time not as the old nut will be either dammaged or not made corectly. For a new square nut yes, old-dammaged no. I do have a couple of old completely square sockets as well that I got at tractor show traiding post, have no idea on name.

I spent $3 at an auction on a wooden box full of square sockets and ratchets - date to the 1920's. Several seem to be branded specific to an automobile. Kinda neat.

Anything you think is obsolete Snap-On still sells . Whitworth socket sets ,square , growlers for generators . All brand new.

I needed an odd size in an emergency and took two pieces of angle iron welded them together and welded a hex nut on the back end so I could put a socket on it.

I needed two square sockets 3/4 and 13/16" I ordered them from NAPA and they didn't have them here but they came fast.
I was junking an old Field Cultivator and they had a lot of square nuts that needed to come off.

On newer yes, older no as they are not quite machined correctly. One that will fit on will just round corners of nut and next size smaller will not go on.
