chain idlers and followers

my unloading augar on my Massey 750 combine is being problematic ,. after repairs that helped it is obvious the floor of the grain tank is terribly weak , this weakness continues to allow shift to the lower mandrel plate just enuf to throw the chain off of a 10 inch sprocket ,the mandrel axle will not settle anymore, according to the repair i made ,,.. best i can understand the leading edge is walking off . it just dont seem logical for the following edge to be coming off . it all happens so fast it is hard to determine,, this #50 chain is perhaps 10 or more ft long, the power side is coming directly under the cab from a 6 inch gear with a 3 inch idler directly behind it to titen , there are 2 anti slap boards at the 5ft wide midsection , this long area affords a lot of trial and error space.. i am thinking i can groove new boards and lengthen them to give the chain better tracking . i have considered adding idler gears. i need reengineering help from guys that understand fast moving chains

Have you checked the alignment with a straight edge? Check off both sprockets for parallelism and angular alignment. Check with it loaded if possible.

If there is enough flex in the floor or mounts to misalign the sprockets, that will be a difficult problem to overcome unless the flex can be reduced.

Also if it has been run misaligned, the chain and sprockets may be worn in a pattern to encourage the riding up and off the sprocket.

Possibly a spring loaded idler may help. Chains don't like long spans, a little wear get multiplied with each link.

before all these problems expanded and presented themselves i put a new chain on the unloader ,to be honest the sloppy chain worked better .because it was able to compensate for the cant . ,and yes , Steve. the lower 10 inch sprocket is canted somewhat ,because the repair settled a little more than i wish it has. in regards to repairing the floor , it would require pulling the augar fabricating anew floor plate and mig welding it in .. my health from neuropathy will not allow any of that abuse. i may buy a nice low houred 510 diesel saturday,. and give up on this 750,.. i all honesty in the 6yrs , with all the halethis 750 has put me thru ..,i have had itup to here ,it has NEVER gave me a honest day of harvesting without trouble of some sort,.

I've been around all sorts of Masseys of that era and never seen that drive to give much problem, and I don't think some of those were perfectly aligned, either.

I still wonder about the chain... you say it's been replaced, is it quality chain such as Diamond or even Daido, or generic chinese stuff that may have stretched?

the chain came from tractor supply ,.,. just came in from checking the mandrel ,. it did settle about 1 fourth inch ,making the 10 inch gear cant not even noticeable to arguably true ,. it is amazing how well things look in broad daylite .i am going to check alignment with a strait edge ,.. could be the latest board improvement was the trouble ,.rite now the ugliest problem is to get the chain free from under the cab that is jammed in there

I have had trouble there with my 550. Do you have an idler block to tension that chain on your 750. My block was so worn I could not get enough tension on the chain. I used a larger synthetic idler off a 660 my hay roller. Also check to be sure you don't have a bearing starting to go out. Nathan

Those long roller chain runs that turn at high speeds get the chain whipping. Then it will fly off. You either need better guide boards or put a couple of idler sprockets in the middle to keep the chain from doing this whipping around.
