Kidde fire extinguisher recall

About all we got are Kidde. Haven't checked but probably all on the recall. If this recall goes as most others, I might just buy some new ones. By the time I pay to send several in, wait weeks/months for replacements, I might better replace with new and not have a gap in coverage. Assuming mine are usable.

This recall, you go to their website, enter the information from your extinguisher(s), and they will send out the replacement. I'll see if it works in 15-20 days.

Should have looked it up before I spoke. Apparently they send replacement, then deal with your old one. Didn't find out if they will want them sent back, or just dispose of them. Large number of models and labels involved. They are going to have a boatload to replace. Moresmoke is right. My careless mistake.

Your post made me go out and check the ones I have in the shop, travel trailer, tractor's, dump truck, etc.
Dang it is cold outside today but it was worth the piece of mind to go and check them to verify none of the ones I have are part of the recall.
Thank you for the information.

The recall instructions seemed very confusing for the average consumer. They stated it was units going back to 1973 when it is more like units made from 2012-2015. They would have been better off to have you enter the data and let the website tell you if it needs recalled or not. I have 6 plastic handled extinguishers all made in mid-2011 and none of them appear to be part of the recall.

I have 9 Kiddie , and if I understand their model numbers none of mine are recalled even thought they all have the plastic handle they picture in the recall. Going to do a little more looking .

Thanks for the info. I have 2 in the shop and both are on the recall. Kiddie says they will send replacements. Guess when I get those I find out what to do with the old ones. Both made in 1981 by the way.

Thanks for this post! We have one of the affected extinguishers. Entered the info, and apparently they will be sending out a replacement. But for the life of me, can't remember when or where we got it. Wife can't either.

I have another that's overdue for being hydrostatically tested. Guess I need to get that taken care of also.

ight want to check, much of the time it is cheaper to buy a new one than to get the old one certified.

You're right! Silly me....I keep thinking I still know people in the business.

One thing many people don't know is that the dry chem extinguishers should be held upside-down and lightly beaten with a rubber mallet. This should be done about once a year, up to twice a year if it's in a vehicle that gets a lot of miles. Vibrations from moving, jostling and road vibrations will cause the dry chemical to settle over time, which makes the extinguishers less effective when they are needed.

On my larger extinguisher, I went about 4 years without loosening it (had a lot going on during that time!) and it took quite a bit of pounding to make the chem finally loosen and drop. Once it's loose, shake the extinguisher a few more times to completely loosen up the material.

Well, I collected all my extinguishers. Didn't get too far with their products listing, so I phoned them. Four out of six are subject to recall. They will ship with in 8 to 10 days. They will not be requiring return of defective ones. The two not in the recall are dated 1985, and 1993. Probably a good idea to replace them out just in case... (Ones in the recall, all 200,2001.)

Probably be a good time for all of us to review our fire extinguisher placement, and add a few where lacking. I'm going to be watching for a sale flyer with reduced prices, because I need to add some, and replace those old ones. Interestingly the plastic valves on the keepers are identical to the ones they are recalling. Go figure.

Thanks, I have a bigger 9 1/2 lbs one. It save my barn from a gasoline fire thirty years ago. Worked good. Thanks Kidde. When recharged the Welding Supply said they wouldn't refill it after this time because of the plastic valve body. Probably just wanted to sell one.

I quit buying the plastic handled one years ago, only buy ones with metal handles and valves now.
Plastic handle extinguishers have around 100 psi pressure, two or three good shots and their done while still having powder inside.
Metal handle and valve units have 150-175 psi pressure, same size bottle will go twice as far.

My newer extinguishers have metal valve bodies because the service shop won't refill the plastic ones any more.
The plastic valve extinguisher mentioned below is full at 195 psi, tested to 585 psi.

Since this has expanded in conversation, I had one round baler fire. I was lucky. Saw the smoke, barely distinguishable from the baling dust, was about 500' from a water hose,
made it over to the hose, dumping the bale on the way and put it out with no damage....was lucky.

So I started carrying a 2 gallon pump up sprayer but the cab is not all that big and no real place to stow it and have it readily available. Was in HD the other day and they had some
(metal handle) about 15" long, don't know the volume but they said about 10 seconds continuous so I opted for one of those and it fits right by the seat. Scared me when I saw the
post till I checked for plastic or metal and it had metal. Whoosh. Saved by the bell.

I had 3 that are to be replaced under the recall. I wrote down the numbers and called them this morning.
Thanks for the recall info !

Update: I regret trading in my old recalled extinguisher. The one they sent me to replace it was plastic tanked and smaller. Basically a disposable toy compared to the old one.

I went to the recall site and after a whole bunch of endless pages to go through, they said mine wasn't on recall.

About a month and a half later, I received a new extinguisher by Fedex. There was a prepaid return Fedex label included. I just put my old one in that box and stuck on the label. Called the FedEx number and they came and picked up the box the next day.
