Air compressor

When you use snap couplers and/or drop reals you often have air leeks that cause the compressor to run when not use.
So I added a solenoid valve to the output of my tank. You can use a low voltage over canter relay, and use door bell switches at remote locations, to turn the solenoid on and off.

I have always turned the compressor off
when I'm not in the shop. One time I walked
the dogs and heard the compressor running
in my neighbors shop, took the dogs out 2-3
hours later and still heard it running.
Called him, he thanked me a couple days
later, a line had blown and it would have
run a long time before he found it.

That sounds like a very good idea for a large shop. My shop is only 2000 square feet though, and like Russ I put a ball valve on the tank outlet, and have done pretty well at shutting it off when I leave.

You could go one step further, wire the solenoid and the motor starter to the shop lights.

I've done a couple shops that way. Just have to remember not to jump when you turn on the lights!

About 15 years ago, we used to come to our place on the weekends and work. One time I left the compressor on and the line broke. Next weekend we were busy and didn't go. Week after that got a call from a neighbor telling me something was running in the shop. Got one of the relatives that lives close to go and turn it off. Don't know how long it ran continuously but guessed about a week. Never ran the same after that and last week the motor died.

Something I never thought about or expected. Kept going after the unloader valve and contactor assy for improper shutdown after filling on a 60 gallon unit. Turned out the check
valve on top of the tank, some 12 years old wasn't seating correctly. So you guys with similar problems, don't forget the outlet check valve on the tank for unreliable operation.

Also, it uses a flat, 6 rib belt. Those babys have to be really tight to function as designed. I couldn't get mine tight enough by hand but a J bolt stuck in the mounting slot and
connected to a dead man tightened as required did the trick. Doing that also made it track correctly as it was running 1 groove off alignment.
