Feeling vindicated today

Yesterday I felt kind of dumb regarding my chainsaw. But... last nite, I was vindicated.

One of our Pella sliding doors has been sounding rough and became hard to move recently. Figured it was the bearing in the roller. Removed the door last week, popped out the roller mechanism and sure enough, the bearing on one of the wheels was shot. I found the p/n for the roller ($8) but couldn't buy it anywhere :x so I ended up buying the whole mechanism ($22). Bought 2, figured I'd just replace both since the door would be off.

Well, last nite, I set out to fix it. Thought it would be a 15 minute job. Door was off in 5 minutes. Went to put the new mechanism in and I couldn't adjust the roller back up into the door far enough so the door would slip over the track. At full "up" adjustment, the roller stuck out below the door about 1/2". Same thing for both new units. What the....?

Since the old and new rollers were identical, I just popped the new roller out of the new mechanism and installed it into the old bracket. Then I took a closer look and found the adjusting screw and nut were assembled wrong on the new units! I disassembled/reassembled one of them, put the old roller in and sure enough, you could move it up into the bracket completely. It didn't stick out anymore. I'm tempted to write the aftermarket mfr and let them know that some guy in Mexico or China is putting them together wrong. One of the packages had been opened, so my guess it was returned because it didn't work right.

Anyway, after my ordeal with the Stihl chainsaw, I was strutting around last crowing to my wife how smart I was. Her response was predictable:

I had the exact same trouble with the sliding mechanism of my elderly friends door here in Australia , the trouble is obviously worldwide !
To compound things he had let it go for so long that the seized rollers wore most of the upright track down . It took creative work with a grinder to create a new track for it to follow .

Glad you got it right and can commiserate with you on "wrong out of the box" stuff. I replaced 2 fog lights in my Dodge recently. The new ones were assembled so that once installed, the adjuster screws were face up and inaccessible. I puzzled about this and went back to the original and looked at them. On those the adjusters were face down and could be used. One more example of manufacturer error.

I picked up a four stroke wheel along lawn edger that had been put out onto the verge with a free sign on it . I couldn't believe it , obviously new and never used with a note saying it wouldn't start .
No fuel getting to the cylinder so I pulled the carburettor apart , it took me a while but I realised the float was in upside down ! No chance of the needle ever admitting fuel into the bowl as it was jammed in solid . Two minutes to refit and another ten to reassemble , works like a charm .

I bought a new doorknob a couple of weeks ago and one of the screws wouldn't start. Turns out it was never tapped. I live a long way from town, so rather than take it back I just retapped it.

About a year ago I bought nine inside door knob assemblies and installed all but one and this spring I decided to put it on and it was a closet set and after putting it in I couldn't get it to work. and after staring and comparing it had a piece missing in the mechanism so I took it back thinking I would be lucky to get it replaced. The return person took a quick look and sent someone to get me a replacement. I was in and out of there in a few minutes after inspecting the new one.

Don't get me started! The 1/2 inch pipe with SAE threads on one end & metric on the other end caused a lot of blue air.

guess so. How long did it take you to figure THAT one out?
