appreciate the responses to my post below.
some of you mentioned an integral rechargeable battery.
mine is a OTOS Z87 W 3/8-13 lens. I made a GOOGLE search for it and came up with nothing.
Does this lens have a integral rechargeable battery inside? The CR 2450 is not a rechargeable battery.
I understand the 'SHADE' dial and the 'SENSITIVITY' dial. So what is the 'GRIND' dial for?
Does that mean grinding with a grinder? duh..........

Yes, grind mode disables the darkening.

And I have always heard putting one in the sun would recharge the battery. Never had it work, thinking it is urban legend.

> I think the cr2450 is a lithium-ion rechargeable but they don't last forever.

The CR2450 is a Lithium button cell battery and as such non-rechargeable. Only Lithium-Ion are rechargeable.

I just had to replace the batteries in my hood this morning. It takes 2032 watch batteries (2 of them), It would not darken at all this morning when I pressed the test button. It works like it should now.

I can not remember the helmet or the battery brand, but if you put in new batteries and the helmet still will not work, it may be thin batteries. Some standard box store batteries are just too thin to make contact. BTW if you have a helmet without a battery(solar only) do not store it in a dark room or in a box. Well go ahead, I will sell you another helmet when the solar dies.

Steve some helmets have a photo cell to charge them. A buddy has one that is 25 years old and was an cheap import that is solar charged. It still is working.

Mine is solar power, about 12 years old I think. Oddly enough, the mercury-arc lamps in the shop at work won't charge it. I have to remember to put it in the sun once in a while if I'm not using it regularly. Of course a welding spark charges it just fine.
