Dump trailer battery

I know this has been asked before but no luck searching for it.
My Provonost dump trailer came with a regular battery not a deep cycle. I always though that was a cost move but it is time to replace it and where I buy my batteries the guy says a deep cycle is not for high amp draws like the hydraulic pump motor (which looks like a starter motor) thus it will go bad quicker than a car battery. I hold you guys opinions higher than his so which should I get, a regular battery or deep cycle? If it makes any difference it is always on a maintainer when not in use. Thanks in advance!

I've never seen one (but then we live in [i:631826c83b]almost[/i:631826c83b]-Mayberry!), but there's been a lot of talk on here at times about a hybrid battery that can be used as either a starting battery or for deep cycle. Sounds like what you need.

I'm sure others will chime in later.

Their are smarter batteries guys than me here, but either if kept charged will be fine. Even an older battery that is weak but not ready to be scraped yet. I always carry a battery pack in truck with me in case a trailer battery gives out or is forgotten to be put on charger, just to be safe.

He's right, the big DC motor is a short term high amp load. Deep cycle with have quite a voltage drop at high load so you have to get a big one or use a starting battery.

Nether. Go with a trolling/starting marine battery type. Use to be called heavy duty. Half way between a deep cycle and a car. They're physically larger to increase the cranking amps and the plates are thicker to increase cycles.

Hello butch6(OH),

Just get the biggest battery that you can fit-afford and you will be fine.

Guido.

I have a 12,000 pound winch on a goose neck trailer that is powered by a large pure deep cycle (not marine combo)battery from TSC. 5 years old, many uses and still like new. Good advice to fit the largest battery possible, as even a deep cycle battery's life is shortened by cycling below 50% charge.

After loading / unloading 4 tractors, battery still shows 80% charge.

A typical deep-cycle battery is usually good for having around 80% of the cranking power of a similar sized car battery. The deep cycle battery will also handle deep discharges much better. I was not aware that dump-trailers draw high amps. Mine certainly does not. The electric motor rarely works hard when running the dump.

Hello JDEM,

Yep they draw some juice! Truck Trailer power gates have a 90 amp circuit breaker,

Guido.
