plastic welders

Looking for your opinions on plastic welders. Was looking at one at Harbor Freight to fix a
couple water tanks that have cracks in them and other odd jobs. Do they work ok or are they a
waste of money? They have about 3 choices so is one better than another? Thanks for any info!

I have one and the welding rods are not much help. It seems to do better to just use the welder to melt the surrounding plastic together. Then afterwards I roughen the plastic around the break and put a patch on with some fiberglass cloth and some epoxy for plastic.

You also must remember that most plastics are busted up by UV . If the old plastic is brittle then there is not much hope. Set a plastic milk jug out in the sun light for a couple of months. Then pick it up and crush it.

I bought one at Harbor Freight and threw it in the trashcan the same day. I found that a Weller soldering gun did a much better job of heating and fusing plastic.

the latest and greated in plastic welders are units like the pro spot nitrogen plastic welders. many body shops are going to them, but they are between 2500 to 6 grand for the unit. they do work great. check with yer local body shop if they have one and have them weld the tanks for you. way better weld and a long term repair. i have yet to take the plunge on one. if i ever find a big ole sack of free money, i may just buy one!! heres a link
poke here

I've got the old HF welder without it's own air source. You'll need a compressor. Worked good once the air amount was sorted and practice. It's one of those "how did I live without it" tools. It's the strongest plastic repair possible.
