Guess there will be a new oldest hardware store now

The current oldest hardware store in the country is closing down.

What a shame - Stood for 235 years but couldn't survive the internet.

I'm actually amazed it's lasted as long as it has - virtually everything else in Worcester has died, reopened as something else, and died again. I always found it interesting that a hardware store of all things could survive on main street in a city.

I think the oldest in Louisiana is here in Natchitoches, Kaffie-Frederick General Mercantile Store. 154 years old and still going pretty strong. Bought a drip coffee pot in there the other day.

Sad when those establishments are gone.

There was one in Crawford Texas that had been there since the town was started 1845 I think.I was working on the genset at the phone office. Needed some special fittings. Told the phone tech I was going to Waco to get them.He told me to just go to the brick building on the corner.I thought he was kidding but went any way. It was like going back in time.He had everything you could think of from way back. In what he called the pipe room. He had pipe in sizes I had never seen before. If it wasn't in the pipe room it was never made. Placed closed in 1994 when the owner died.

There used to be a small hardware store just east of Conroe, TX many years back. Wasn't as old as those mentioned, but I remember going there with Dad one time to look for a hard-to-find part. The guy who owned the place had to think a minute, then you could actually SEE the light bulb go on in his head! He climbed up on a table (took him a few minutes to clear it off enough), then removed one of the drop ceiling panels. Reached up, felt around, and pulled out exactly what we were looking for. Charged us the price on the tag, which must've been there for more'n 20 years!!

Then I guess Sauser's in Pine City Mn is just a newby. Grandfather, or maybe Great Grandfather of current owner bought it in 1906, have no idea how long it had been in business before then. Wood floor creaks when you walk in, adds to the atmosphere. Spools of rope, cable, elec wire etc on the rack. Grab the end, walk to the mark on floor to the length you want, clerk chops it off with an ax. Nuts & bolts in old wood bins along the wall, grab one or a few hundred, whatever you need. About a year ago they did a bit of building upkeep, guy that owns the place was on ladder scraping & painting window frames.

Billy,

Swaim Hardware in Paris, TX started in 1932, but it is the same type of store. Just off the courthouse square.
