propane generator

I have purchased a dual fuel (gas & propane)generator, I want to connect it to a 250 gallon tank. It came with a small regulator for small bottles. I am assuming I will need a regulator at the tank to scale down the pressure, but can I use a standard regulator for a house or do I need some other type of regulator. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Don't hold my feet to the fire but going from a big tank most propane companys use a high pressure regulator to drop things down to a couple of pounds and then they have something like you hot dog grill deal. Talk to the guys in the service dept. At your local LP joint. That high pressure regulator is usually painted red. That generator will be great on LP. Very clean and runs a little quieter. Gas goes bad, LP not so. Great storage. A 20 pound tank is about the same as a full gas tank. If you can find some, pick up some of the big LP tanks they use on fork lifts.

The regulator on the tank takes the pressure down to about 10 lb. The one on a home takes it on down to about 11 inches of water column.
Unless you own the tank, the tank both regulators, and the line belongs to the LP company. They don't like anyone messing with their equipment. So get them to hook up your generator.
A generator uses about as much LP as a home furnace. So if you are planning to hook to a line that feeds a home, that line may not be large enough.
So you really need to talk to your LP supplier.

To run an engine off your propane tank you need a high rate of fuel. Low pressure regulators used for homes don't have the capacity to push fuel of any volume any distance.

What the propane co. did with mine, when installing the tank for my gen, was to come off the tank with the high press (10 psig or something like that) and run the line to the appliance. At the appliance, the regular low pressure regulator is attached just before the line enters the unit. My Generac's directions covered that with distances and all. My tank is about 15 ft from my tank which I would consider a short run ⅝ soft copper line, but they saw to do it anyway. No gripes. Works great.
