Dewalt impact works intermittently

My 1/2" 18V Dewalt impact started acting up the other day. The rocker switch would not always make it go in forward or reverse. I suspected a bad switch, so I replaced that. It didn't make much of a difference at all- it worked right away with the new switch, but quickly started acting up again. It will work when tilted just right, but now I have a new problem: the batteries I used in it will not charge properly now. The charger light will flash inconsistently instead of a steady flash like before. Is this impact overall bad and also eating my batteries?

Thank you for any suggestions!

LonM- check where the battery terminals connect with the driver, in the handle. My 18v dewalt impact did the exact same thing yours is doing. The connectors in the handle were not making good connections with the battery terminals.

I will replace that part, as I noticed a bit of corrosion and a slightly out-of-place terminal where the battery connects to the rest of the tool.

Thank you for your help!

Hello LonM,

Your did not check the battery pack voltage? If the charger is double flashing your pack is not getting charged. Check the voltage of the pack, then you will know if its the pack. Try charging a good pack if you have one. Voltage Should be around 20 volts or so on a good pack. If you are making A good connection to the tool with the pack, then you may have a brush either hanging up or not making full commutator contact. This last brush problem though would only be if the tool has lots of hours.

I think constant flashing indicates battery is either too hot/cold. Read directions on charger, it will tell you.

You need a good battery strong battery for 1/2 impact to work properly.

Sometimes I have an issue with the connections inside cordless tool. I use a screwdriver and move contacts to make a better connections.

Thank you for all of your help. After letting the batteries sit overnight to cool down, they charged normally today and worked fine for several charge/discharge cycles on a drill I was using. I was not aware that the charger would not charge a hot battery...As for the impact wrench, it appears one terminal is shot. If I pull the battery out slightly, it will work okay. And since the batteries work fine on a drill, I think it is narrowed down to the terminals on the impact where the battery attaches.

My next step is to find a replacement connector for the impact.

Thanks again!
