Follow up to Rag Discussion

I used to do that and often I would get one that had a button or something left on the cloth and damage something or the material was something that wasn't absorbent. Then I got to noticing how much time I was spending cutting the rags and started just buying rags. They are better and cheaper in the long run. When I was cutting them I just used a straight edge and a utility knife.

I've got a buddy that brings me bags of sheets, pillowcases, and hospital gowns, and scrubs that get thrown away due to stains, etc.

I use a pair of lineman/electricians scissors to cut them up. With the sheets all I do is snip one end, tear it, and then snip and tear that strip. It only takes me about 5 minutes or so to make quite a few rags once I get into the groove.

The gowns and scrubs are a bit more difficult, but they make great rags also. I just cut, and rip them randomly.

Many years back I purchased a 50 pound box of rag remnants, from
what company I don't recall. They offered all types of materials,
general wiping to soft material like sweat shirts.
Some were so large that I would cut them up into smaller pieces
buy clamping a utility knife in my vice and drawing the rags over
the razor. Worked for me.

I bought a 50LB box of rags from the paint store that turned out to be new tee-shirts. About a third were my size so I didn't buy tee-shirts for a while. Cotton diapers are my favorite rag.

Once on a big wire pull we were cleaning all the pulling soap off the wires and I started pulling whole Florida T-shirts out of the rag box . I took them home for the kids.

Unless they've got a quilting wife,these guys won't know what a rotary cutter is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!............................gtm

a powered rotary cutter is what the commercial rag guys use. Real slick gizmo. A cross between a jig saw frame with a round rotating razor knife blade doing the cutting. I suspect it is similar in cutting principal to a disc haybine.
