I might be a couple years late to help you, but maybe could help someone else.

I think your main difficulty was that the upper and lower nuts and blade shaft are threaded LEFT HAND, so you may have been turning the wrench the wrong way. This is a standard engineering design feature, since the shaft rotation and torque from hitting a sapling, etc, will tend to tighten the nut rather than loosen it.

There are some new old stock shafts, blades, etc. listed on eBay for sale.

I've had two of these, just like your picture, wouldn't trade mine for anything. But the company was forced to close because several people got hurt and sued them. DR has a very few parts left, as they had carried some of the last models made by Bachtold. Their parts guy says that Midwest Manufacturing also went under, they had picked up the parts business for a while.
