Post hole diggers

If any of you go to buy one. Stay away from the one called Thunderbay. Parts for the engine are not out there. Have one in the shop spent three hours looking on line called three shops. No one has any idea what the engine is or where to get parts. In fact the three shops will refuse to work on them.

A lot of that kind of stuff you just have to fix yourself. What is wrong with it? A lot of the parts are pretty generic, like carburetors, and probably ignition parts. Gearbox parts might be a different story. I see that they only sell for about $200, when you buy something that cheap they are considered disposable, if you could find a competent mechanic with parts it would cost more to fix it than the new price.

Russ I am a mechanic. This is a customers unit. Came in for a primer bulb and tank seal where the fuel lines come through. Primer bulb no problem changed that. Went to look for a new seal. No information on parts on any site. Had to buy a universal kit. The spec sheet list the engine as a Kohler which I know isn't true. Because Kohler never made a 2 cycle engine. The only parts it list is the augger parts. I don't understand why produce something if you are not going to sell parts for it. Unless you expect it to be a throwaway unit. I tell everyone to by name brand or at least buy something you can get parts for.

Be careful fixing disposable things like that unless you know the guy well or get a deposit. If the bill is much over half the cost of a new one you might be stuck owning it.

Hello Billy Shafer,

Kohler made two cycle engines. They also have diesel engines as well. They have free manuals at their web site,

Many years ago we had a Stihl two stroke post hole borer and it went well for donkeys years and parts were ok. Stihl equipment is still available as far as I know, and Mr Google lists them, but they are not cheap. But then, what constitutes 'cheap'?

Hlo Billy,

I quickly posted the link. But Kohler has made two cycle engines. I have downloaded many manuals from their site, never needed one for a two cycle though. Did you look? Amazon has many listings for Kohler two cycle engines, parts, and manuals,

Guido.

Billy I will second Kohler made 2 cycle motors. I have a portable water pump that has one. Makes it a lot lighter. I bet it is 40 years old.

Thanks everyone. I have over forty years working on Kohler engines. Never heard of a 2 cycle one. Of course in my part of Texas. We don't get much snow.
