weld a clutch pedal?

Blueridge,Touch a grinder to it,little or no sparks = cast iron,if it sparks it is steel or malleable iron and can be easily welded.

(quoted from post at 02:27:19 08/15/17) can you weld a clutch pedal on a Farmall H without pre-heating? or is it cast Iron? thanks Gene

I'd preheat it. And throw it in a box of kitty litter after I'm done.

We could give you a better answer if we knew why and where you want to weld it. It'S cast gray iron, so in the absence of the answers I'll say NO. Any tractor salvage yard should have one.

The Nickle rod to weld it right will cost more than a good used pedal.

On something like that I do not think I would risk welding it because if your weld did not hold you could end up in trouble if it broke at the wrong time. The H is such a common tractor I am sure you can find good used clutch pedal. Shoot I bet I have one since I have an H parts tractor.
That said if I was going to try to weld one I would grind it so where the weld would go is V out then weld it up and then add fish plates to both sides so as the make it stronger in the break area

thanks guys! all i'm wanting to do is make it wider where your foot sets, when grinding it has the same
orange sparks as a piece of hot rolled flat steel, I think ill pre-heat and cool in my floor sweep barrel, just to be safe. Thanks again Gene

If same sparks, then might be cast steel.

I would have no problem welding a wider on the top if the original top is used as backing.

"A clutch pedal would likely be a steel forging and not cast iron"

Gotta call you "out" on this one, Doc!

A "steel forging" wouldn't have broken. Bent, yes, but it wouldn't have broken without being completely mangled.

Don't think it ever broke as such Bob , Blueridge just wants a bigger foot plate on it . You are right of course a steel forging wouldn't have broken though .

Lots of steel forgings in an H, crankshaft, transmission shafts, gears, but sadly, the clutch pedal is NOT ONE OF THEM. It's cast iron, plain old cast gray iron. It's probably a slightly higher grade of gray iron, class 40 or 50 instead of the common class 30.

Look at the pedal close, where's the mold parting line, where's the draft in the mold?
