found this thing in barn in Maine.

Looks like only part of a hay hook. I found a piece like that in an old barn,
but there was one on each side, with a connecting bar on top. It also had a
round "eye" on top for the rope.
 
Yep, Harpoon fork for haying. Hay was put up loose but still need a away to lift it into the hay mow.
 
The harpoon was the earliest version of hay fork. It was replaced by the two prong versions which were then replaced by the claw types. Each one could lift more hay than the previous and the barn and especially the carrier and track had to be built stronger to accommodate them.
