The original subject was "Re: Points setting tool kit".

Tom, I know this is an older post but new to me. I have a condensed version of this tool.

A tool I had was a screwdriver handle with a flexible shaft and the right size Allen wrench on the end to set the dwell on the points.

As I recall, you installed the points with a basic setting. Then with the engine idling you turned the adjusting screw on the points clockwise until the engine began to slow down, then turned it back counter-clockwise a half turn.

I have never seen one of those before but I sure would have owned on back in my dealership days. One of the best things that happened to GM distributors was the uni sets that came out in the late 70s,points and condenser all ready mounted to a common plate, two easy screws and a dwell meter,it took five min to change them.

(quoted from post at 07:45:52 08/20/17) What is different about the Fords that it does not work on Fords ?
Unisets were GM, delco-remy only, only one design. AFAIK nobody else ever copied it. Good move for GM since at the time they were using the same distributor in almost everything.

Hey Ron (42 Dodge).......... I wanted to talk to you about the oldschool point gap. Please give me a call Chuck 815-705-4438

He wasn't asking about the Unisets, he was asking why the tool shown doesn't work on Fords. A question I am asking as well.

OBVIOUSLY, the graduated Allen-head point setting tool works only on GM, not Chrysler, but yet the kit is still labelled for Chrysler, so that tool can't be the reason.

I'd ASSUME the reason it doesn't work on Fords is that GM and Mopar distributor cams must have been the same diameter, so the same sleeve would fit.

Ford must have used different distributor cam diameters.

There was probably another kit # for a Kastar "Ford only kit", for sure there's another more universal kit, Kastar #457 that covers Ford and Autolite and others plus GM.
