Electric autotransformer?

I'm curious about a device called an autotransformer. It converts one leg of power into two legs at the meter. Over the weekend I lost one leg of underground from the pole into the house so that only some of my lights and outlets worked. The power company says moles (I have many) probably chewed the underground wire. Until the power folks can dig and repair, the lineman (at 3 a.m. Saturday) hooked up the autotransformer to give me up to 80 temporary amps as needed. I've never heard of that device. Is it fairly new or have I just never needed one before?

The old fashioned Ignition coil is an autotransformer . Just means the primary and secondary are connected at one point . No isolation between primary and secondary as in a typical transformer . Which is why they are not allowed in many applications .
Any old 120/240 to 480 single phase transformer will function as an auto transformer . Just supply 120V between the neutral and one of the 120V terminals. Now measure across between the two 120V terminals, it will be 240V. The 480V side will also have 480V on it .
