Maytag washing machinne repair issue

SHE noticed black specks on my underwear. SHE said that she had that happen to her also. SHE can not remember how the problem was repaired. She thought it was a seal that needs to be replaced. Is it safe to assume that the seal is located under the agitator? And if oil has been getting out, thru the seal, how do you check the transmission oil level?
Thank you

Pull the agitator out which on many is just garbing the top of it and unscrew it then pull it up and out. Then look it over. Many are not set up to be repaired so if it is going bad you may be washer shopping. But it can also be caused by a simple dirty washer so you need to do a empty run or 2 with soap and see if it clears ups.

I take it this is a front-load washer? Yes, some models (I don't know if it's all) have oil inside the drum, and I know that the seal can leak. From what I've read, this is a problem that can only be fixed by replacing the drum. Why? Because the seal and bearings are molded into the plastic, and it would cost far more to repair than to replace.

That said, when our old Maytag front-loader decides it wants to break down, if it's something like this, I'll do what I can to try and repair it myself. Don't know if it'll work or how long it may last, but would make for a fun project.

I replaced agitator seal on old speed queen years back. It was leaking water on the floor. The second time, we started getting oil in the drum.

I believe what happens is the gear box starts taking on water and the oil floats out the top. The second time ours had shafts and bushings pitted and worn out from the water in it so I junked it.

If you're going to fix it, you will need to get the water out of the gearbox or it won't be long and you'll be right back in the same situation.

It is the same as vertical shaft dishwashing machines. by the time you see evidence of the leak, the motor or gearbox under the seal is junk.

Wife had a top load Maytag that was doing that. The old repairman said it was not a faulty seal - he insisted it was a build-up of fabric softener under the agitator, and chucks of that stuff were falling off and staining the whites. He was right - I had to make a puller to pop the agitator out, and that gunk was a quarter inch thick under there. Cleaned it good and no more staining. I've fixed two more Maytags with the same problem.

I did this recently on a Whirlpool front loader. Bearings were pressed into the plastic drum hub, totally removable, but not listed as spare parts. All common metric sizes though, easy to find.

Fabric Softener? Whats That? I suppose it is possible that there is some there from back in the days of being married. I will see about pulling it off and if I am luck, all I need to do is clean it.
Thank you
