Microsoft Security Essentials will give you a red screen if it detects a threat on a web page.

Here's a screen shot I captured on one.

I get a blue screen from them all the time. Warning me not to shut down but call this number. I shut down restart no problems.

I got one the other day, red screen warning about spy ware or something, call this number...

I quickly held the power button, shut down.

Powered back up, went to Firefox, it came back. Powered of again.

Powered up in safe mode, did a "system restore" back a couple days. So far that got rid of it!

I do think it was a ransom ware virus trying to get in. Had I left it on long enough to fully load, or clicked any thing on the page, it would have got me!

I cannot suggest this highly enough - go to the link below, download their Free Trial Version and install on your puter. The trial will expire in a couple of weeks, but will remain operable on the "Free Version" level. Malwarebytes Free version does NOT run automatically - it must be manually run. I would suggest running it at least every month.

That's great software.Anti-Exploit also is good from them it runs in the background.Limited options but it works.
This is great also https://www.bitdefender.com/solutions/free.html.Read up on it.I've never had problems with it.

you can also do a control-alt-del and choose "start task manager" option

when the task manager comes up choose the "microsoft message" and then click on end task... it will end that tab and you're good to go

The red page my store manager got was, indeed, ransomware, and once you see that page you're screwed. All her "personal" files, addressbook, notes, all gone, encrypted. The red page said to open a nnalert wallet and send X amount of bitcoins, around $800 worth, to some untraceable account. Of course no guarantee that these are honest and upright thieves that won't just take your money and run without unlocking your files! She got a new computer from the head office.

I have malwarebytes premium 3.1.2. somehow, something slipped by.I have had it for 3-4 years. thanks for all the info.

A lot of people now don't run any kind of malware or virus protection on their machine because it is only so so effective. To be protected do the following:

1. Keep your machine up to date with security patches.
2. Never click on any links you are not sure of and never open any email attachments that you are not 100% sure are legit.
3. Never follow links to update that you didn't initiate, for example if something says to update flash never click on that, if you are concerned open a new tab or browser and then go to adobe and update. I personally don't even run flash because it is such a security mess.
4. Always have 2 backups of your data and one of them needs to be off site. Not only for ransom ware but because if there is a fire or a flood you don't want to loose all of your data.

Leon -- New version of Malwarebytes says you no longer need separate anti-virus program, so maybe that's what you're looking for.

I've been a Norton user since the '90's. Had about a 15 year period without internet, so didn't have to worry about it, but went through last night looking at all the different options. I like having Malwarebytes free version that I can run any time, but as I'm adding protection to the wife's cell phone, decided to stay with Norton yet again. You can cover 5 devices for $50/year current price.

All of the top brands rate right up there, but none are absolutely perfect. But as mentioned, I'm usually pretty careful about what sites I go onto.....although there IS this one very strange site - YT something-or-other! *lol* Anyway, I've been very pleased with Norton and the free Malwarebytes, along with making backups on (2) different HDD's that are otherwise never connected to a PC.
