I decided to add a new cast aluminum intake manifold while I was working on this engine. Reason is www has stories of warped plastic, like I currently have/had causing lean running and major engine damage.

I am wondering about the little metal plate that has the carb output ports partially blocked that mounts between the carb and the intake manifold. Do you have any comments about why that is there and whether or not It's needed? I got a gasket set with the new manifold and one of those was not included even though the gaskets that would mount on either side are in with the new manifold. One was included in the gaskets supplied with the new carb you recommended which I installed (like the one BS put their originally).

Thoughts appreciated,
Thanks,
Mark

Engine: 40H777-0125-B1 before SN 12040200.

Never saw a. Aluminum manifold. That plate I would guess acts as a mixer or vortex to make everything nicely mix up. I definetly put it back in.

Ok. Thanks for the reply. Makes sense. I posted here as I thought I remembered our first conversation here but while looking for the picture you posted of the 791230 carb I found it back where it belongs in the 'Garden Tractor" section.

1. Having gone back there just now I feel better putting it back in:

2. The gasket kit picture you supplied there is for the carb and it's installation, not the manifold. Okaye!

3. The rectangular pair of gaskets is for the spacer required (for mine anyway) to match up to the air filter positioning, since the air inlet duct where the filter mounts has to come off to get the carb off; prudent thing is to install new gaskets when reinstalling. Makes sense. Comparing the plastic OEM to the new alum, the alum is shorter which would change the position of the air filter mounting. What else I read into this is that this carb AND the aluminum manifold are retrofits for earlier OEM designs that failed.

The alum manifold (797503) is the replacement for the OEM initial design using the 591784 plastic. So that further supports the leave the deflector plate in. In looking at it's position, shape and size, it appears that it's designed to help venturi flow at low throttle settings. I guess they added that as part of adapting the new carb to the engines.

4. The deflector plate and it's 2 gaskets fit on the outlet end of the carb to manifold interface.

5. It's all there. The manifold to head gaskets are supplied as the manifold has to be removed from the engine to get at the carb....makes sense.

I know lots of folks follow along threads and you never know that they are there. Lots of these followers have similar problems as they obviously have similar problems with BS building 30,000 engines world wide PER DAY.....as I read in my new BS after market repair manual. That's why I try to put my thoughts in my posts and look at things using logic as a base allowing the followers to read the history and come to their own conclusions about their problems, if any, whether to fix or not, and possibly an aid to accomplishing that.

Just for the curious. You installed a new cast manifold. Didn't know they made one for the V-tech engines. Mine are 21 and 22hp. Give use folk the part number for that cast manifold for future reference please. By the way, where did you get the information?

Got-R-Done. Decided the gasket set in the carb. picture mentioned earlier was the way to go which included the metal plate. Very happy with the outcome. This is on my DR Pro-Z which I bought new back in 2005 and have sort of retired from grass cutting but still work it around the yard. New job for it is towing the little 5x8 trailer I recently purchased from TSC for hauling limbs and such off rather than having to use the 6x16' tandem. I got the all wire one and built in ramp and it's nice and light and works super for my needs. Since the place is going on 40 years old now, trees are getting their share of attention with trimming and leaf raking in the fall. Too bad when you buy a piece of farmed land, you have to wait so long to get some nice shade.
Thanks for steering me onto this new carb.
