Another Toy to play wih

A few weeks ago a close friend headed for a nursing home gave me a slightly used 5K Generator which Needs governor work. Parts on order. A Flux wire welder that needed a part and works fine now.
Today he gave me an old Kohler Military Generator mounted on a trailer, which I know nothing about. I brought it home and he told me it has not started it in two years. I cleaned out the fuel tank, replaced the spark plug, charged the battery, removed and flushed the fuel line and hit the starter.

The engine started in about 5 seconds and ran smooth for about two minutes until I shut it off. I need to clean the control panel and replaced the dirty outlets.
I didn't plugged anything in the generator side yet to check the output.

I ordered a Killawatt meter to check the HZ, amps and voltage. No marks or labels to ID the switches or fuses except the big KOHLER name on the back. He was given the generator about 10 years ago and ran his whole house including the AC during a hurricane.

Anyone have a old military gen?

This one has a single cylinder but the power of the 30" tall engine is impressive.

Good for you but, it's a shame the old fella has to get rid of his things.I am not looking forward getting old and having to get rid of my stuff.

Try posting on SteelSoldiers. It's like yesterdaystractors for old and surplus military equip. Big section on gen sets fourms.

I meant to add that last year I got a 10 kw, MEP-803A from a liquidation site. I use the 3 phase power for and old lathe and mill I have.

It's like this one.

But, the good news is, he is finding a good home for his toys.

So many don't. They pass on, nobody knows what they have, the stuff goes to the scrappers.

Hopefully, it will be a long, long time before I end up in a home, but I am already trying to give away some of the stuff that I do not need now, and stuff that I am sure our kids don't even know what it would be used for.
