Shopping for new tiller....
Have small garden ; prefer front tine type
Am interested in Cub Cadet front tine
Any pros and cons? Reviews. ..?
Troy -Built looks like about the same thing.

Front tillers kill me, jar me to death.

I would buy only a rear tine counter rotating tiller.

I have a rear tine pony, hate it, it's not counter rotating.

Have a 30 inch counter rotating tiller on old John Deere, love it.

My dad has 2 rear tine cubs. The old one had a Briggs and Scrap iron on it and started using more oil than gas,so ended up buy a new one. The ones the dealers sell have Hondas on them and the ones at tractor supply have Koehler's. He went with the Honda. I was at Horrible Freight and they had one of those knock of Hondas for around $200 so I put it on the old cub. They are great machines, would steer clear of a front tine as George said they will beat you to death.

I have owned a cub cadet front tine since 2006 and it has not given me any problems to this date. Doesn't get ran a whole lot, but no problem starting it, I do store it inside 95% of the time.

How small is your garden? I just bought a 2HP electric tiller for about $150. Incredible power and seems pretty rugged. Very lightweight and zero maintenance.

My old toro was a front tine and maneuvered easily . Engine broke a rod and broke the crankcase. I feel like rear tine might be harder to maneuver in small garden between the tomato cages. Actually the old engine was a Briggs but can't find a replacement because this one had pulley also on cam shaft that ran the reverse belt. Actually worked rather well
Can't find that engine anywhere. Thot about a Horrible Freight engine but not compatible
Any ideas. Thanks to those that replied.

The troy bilt pony has two output shafts, one runs backwards. They are available, but cheaper to just buy a new tiller.

I had an old wards front time tiller. Double pulley on single shaft. Two idler pulley. The belt for reverse was twisted to make tines run backward.

I would buy a cheap HF 5 hp for around $100 and just forget the reverse if you like what you have.

If the old one is a Briggs say a 5 hp. it's an easy fix. Find a decent running one that's similar but has no the extra shaft. Pull the side cover off the crankcase of the one with the extra shaft, and mount it to the similar running engine. The extra shaft runs off the camshaft and it bolts right up. Its an easy swap. I have done 3 that way so far.

I work in a small engine shop. If you really want a front tine tiller, Look around for a Maxim or a Merry Tiller. I know they are probably a lot more money, but they are well worth the investment. Their chain drives will usually outlast several engines.
