Learning something at age 82.

WELL something I didn't know until yesterday morning
when my Son and I was drilling a tool for Pex ring crimping. I bought a set of hole saws from Northern
Tool ,years ago to make bushing pins for our log splitter and 706 Tractor. Material on both was thick
stuff, over one inch. We was drilling out hole for pex rings and the teeth was dfitestroyed, oiled the saw constantly while in use so couldn't figure out why.
I found out what we3nt wrong.Temper went out so now
it's time for a Milwaukee hole saw. Going to re temper it after second usage. It's a good thing to rememember , saves buying new over and over again.

Just a tip I've learned at age 82. Gaying goes '
caqnt teach an old dog new tricks doesn't fit .

Regards LOU.

Lou when using a hole saw on thick metal you need a lot of coolant or cutting oil. Then let the hole saw cool during the cut too. I have a set of Dewalt and another that is Milwaukee. The Milwaukee cuts faster but heats up more so you have to watch and keep the saws cool.

Yeah and SLOW IT DOWN. Nearly all hand drills turn way too fast for hole saws. They don't cut any faster that way but they do heat up and dull out much, much faster.

When ever I can use oil or water. ANYTHING to keep it cool. Now in warm weather there is something that I do. Take your garden hose and just put a tiny dribble of water on you project. Have the water run away from you. Cools and gently flushes away the chips. Works wonders.

How are you "re-tempering" your hole saw?

I only use bi-metal hole saws, but even those will quickly dull in hard material.

Something else that can really help is starting your saw cut just enough to establish an outline of the hole. Then, take a drill with a small bit and drill all the way through the material at a couple of points on the hole's circumference. That really helps with clearance and speed of cutting. If you're getting a hole saw hot enough to anneal it, it's moving too fast or not being lubricated enough.

Good luck!
