Putting a Window AC in a Wallside Window

Has anybody mounted an air condiioner in a wallside window. They are vinyl and have about a 2" channel on the sill that the window goes dwon into. Wall side makes a replacement for the bottom window for an ac unit but they want $150.00 for it.

Wasn't Wallside, but I installed a window A/C in a vinyl window. If REALLY careful, you can usually get them to stay in place, but I wouldn't recommend trusting just the vinyl to hold it. I made a wire shelf that mounted on the outside of the house and supported the weight of the A/C. Just uses lightweight steel, but could also make one from wood. Only downside to wood is it'll hold moisture and rot after a while.

Actually, come to think about it, I think the metal support I used was an old one that came from auction that I had to modify for the smaller A/C. ....Not sure I even have the thing anymore.

Go to Amazon and type in "window a/c support" and you'll find a lot of choices, for MUCH less than your OEM thing.

I will add to Kcm's answer in that putting a filler strip into the bottom channel so the weight is not on the fins is a good practice. Jim

I made a filler strip by ripping a board on my table saw to fit the width of the sill. I can't remember exactly what it looked like (we got rid of the window unit five years ago), but I recall cutting a groove in it for the AC flange to sit in.
