Old pipe vise jaws

Got an old Erie Tool Works yoke style pipe vise that I would like to bring back to usable condition. The 3 jaws are made from some kind of cast steel, not very hard as I've been filing the teeth back to square with no problems. I want to put a black finish on the jaws now by hot dipping them in a bucket of used oil. Get them dull red and dip. Safe or not? For the jaws I mean, don't want them any softer or too brittle. Thanks for any input.

Any kind of heat above about 500F degrees (metal starts to turn blue) will affect any hardness that is in the teeth.

Paint them black, or just let the oil from the thread cutting process preserve them.

Case harden them. It can be done for moderate cost. (google case hardening) or purchase a strip of annealed 1040 steel (look up suppliers) and make new teeth for the vice. It will drill and file, then harden it to be usable. Jim
