Hydraulic belt lacer

I've got one of those lacers for putting Clipper lacing in baler belts, that lays down on the floor and has two levers that ratchet the jaws together. Over the years it's gotten worse and worse when it comes to loading the lacing in it. I just have a devil of a time getting the lacing down in far enough to slide the rod through it.
I've got one here that goes in a vice too. I hardly ever used that one because I couldn't get the vice to tighten down enough to get it in without having to use a hammer and anvil to get it in the rest of the way.

I put that vice model in the hydraulic press. What a sweet way to lace belts! That thing loads as smooth as silk and the press really mashes it in there. I laced up a spare a week or so ago,and two more this morning. Takes no time at all.

I've been using the press with my vise lacer for several years now. It does work slick. Should have thought of that 20 years ago.

I generally do a bunch of belts all at once. I've been threatening to rig a square plate for my 27 ton wood splitter to fit over the wedge. I've busted 2 or 3 vises trying to squeeze the lacer!

My press has a 2" round piece that is welded on for the press. How or what do you use to make sure you get a full press out to the ends of the lacer. Mine is a 7' belt. I hope I've been clear enough so you can answer my question. Keith

I use the Mato lacer that was provided to JD balers. It uses the vise, then drive the rivets with the special punch, release the lacer, peen the rivets and you are done. I had a vise that would mount in the hitch of my service van and laced hundreds in the field without pulling the belt from the machine, provided the length was still in spec.
