Briggs Engine Rebuild

Gentlemen, I have a Briggs 16 HP opposed twin engine that I want to rebuild. Model number is 402437 it is a 40 CI displacement. My question is will the crank and rods interchange from a 42 CI displacement motor, and make it a 18 HP? I am thinking that if I get one from a similar 42 CI engine I should be good?

You might need to ask down on the garden tractor forum. I don't know if Briggs changed the Bore, the stroke, or both to go from 40 cu. in to 42 cu. in. If you are asking about parts interchangability, get the model and type number for both engines and you can find the parts books online and just compare part numbers.

One thing I've seen recently on those engines: the oil slinger gear that mates with the cam gear has very little tooth contact to start with. (In some cases at least.) And eventually will wear a notch in every tooth on the plastic slinger and it will quit turning because it quits engaging the cam gear and then the engine locks up or breaks a rod from losing lubrication.

You might want to count on relacing that oil slinger assembly during whatever rebuild you attempt.

You could probably find a complete running motor for less than cost of parts to repair yours. I see those opposed twins all the time in the scrapyard on rider mowers. Usually vertical shafts, but occasionally horizontals.

I'm not sure what yours is, I cant tell by your model #.

You might also check craigslist. Sometimes I see engines people pull off a rider before they junk it. A lot of times $100 or less.

I was a Snapper dealer for several years back when mowers used L head 12hp engines. New engine cost me $375.00. One year you couldn't find a new 12hp to save your life. I was forced to rebuild them. The machine shop bored them 20 over and provided the new piston. I ordered aftermarket gasket set, and New rod. Much cheaper than OEM. I would also make bushings and replace the throttle shaft and seals. With the machine shop labor I had $480 in each engine.
