Truck mounted bench vise

I've been finding more and more the need for a bench vise on my truck. However my little old dodge does't have a reciever nor do I have the urge to install one. Has anyone had any luck with clamp on
vises, figured then i could clamp it to the bed side and remove when not in use? Any comments are appriciated.

It would be easier, cheaper and stronger to bolt square tube to bumper or bed. Most anywhere you clamp will just bend and tear out.

Bolt a square tube in the corner of the box. Similar to a receiver. If you want to be fancy, you can make your vice slide in and out of the box.

I had one on my 1969 Chev and it is still on the bed which is laying out back. I also have seen them where they where mounted to a piece of metal that was stuck down into one of the steak pockets on the bed so it can be removed

If you plan on using it for small, light objects like to hold something while inspecting or cleaning, a clamp on vise works OK.
If you plan on pounding or prying, you need to mount the vise real secure.

I even have a very small vise that has a suction cup like base that I stick to my tool box. Like I said, fine for small stuff.

Has anyone noticed the price of vises lately? HF had a 5" vise on sale this past weekend for $55. I'm using a well made 5" vise that I bought on a garage sale 40-some years ago for $3-4 dollars.

Do you have a way to fabric the part of the receiver that you would need for a vice. Years ago people would make a base to fit the stake pocket on the trucks, but they don't make the bodies that way anymore.

Most likely sold as a kit of metal parts and the craftsman built the bade and ways. Also may have been the kit was sold by a mail order house. Most interest should be in a museum otherwise just not suitable for a modern woodworking shop.

If you really plan to tug, pull, and pound things in the vise, a hitch mount would be well worth it. You don't need an actual Reese hitch, there are adaptors available to bolt on your bumper. That would be strong enough for what you are using it for.

horse-shoer.. has a piece of metal bolted to the tailgate, with both sides folded almost all the way back over on itself. And a vice bolted to a flat piece of metal, that slides in to the piece on the tailgate...So.. he can slide it in, and when done, slide it out, and back into the bed...

Yeah, what about them? $55 is cheap for a cheap vise. It's not one of Harbor Freight's better products, unless they've improved in the last 10 years.

Good USA-made vises cost upwards of several hundred dollars, and old ones are getting more valuable all the time because of youtube. Especially Wilton vises.

You've really got to take advantage of someone who has no idea what they've got to get a decent old vise for $5 anymore. People have wised up, or *THINK* they've wised up. At garage and estate sales even the China junk vises are priced out of this world if they look old.
