18 volt DeWalt

I have a DeWalt drill motor with 2-18 volt lithium batteries and charger.
I also have an 18 volt DeWalt side grinder that uses the Ni Cad batteries.
Is it possible to adapt the Ni Cad tool to use the lithium battery?

Thanks,
Dusty

Hello Dusty MI,

Yep! Your results may vary. I used 5 cells @2.8 Ah each.jury
is still out,

I don't even have a Ni Cad battery case.

Dusty

What I would like is a Ni Cad battery case that will go into the side grinder and would be able to plug a Lithium battery into the Ni Cad case.

Hello Dusty MI,

I get mine mostly from friends, also I get them from Lowes. Just ask the manager if its O.K. I return mine to Lowes in the case,

Guido.

Dusty,
I don't fully understand your question. I have a 18v
right angle dewalt grinder. My 9 year old Li ion
dewalt battery fits perfectly in grinder.

So what's your question?

I would highly recommend NEVER TAKE A 18V LI-ION
BATTERY APART. The design of the battery is very
technical. The part of the battery that goes into
the charger is a micro processor that what wires
going to the ends of all the cells. It disconnects
the battery from load when cell voltage gets
critically low.

I'm not a fan of having batteries rebuilt at
Battery+. I'll bet the Li ion battery along with the
micro processor is way above their pay grade.

There is no way you can rearrange the cells to fit
in a different case without damaging the ribbon like
wires connected to the ends of the pair of cells.

BTW, The Dewalt Li ion is a wimp. Lucky to hold half
the charger of a Ni Mh.

Try it another way.
I would like an adptor that will fit into my 18 volt Ni Cad side grinder, that will take an 18 volt Lithium battery.
I have the 18 volt batteries and charger.

IF you have Factory 18v DeWalt tools and FACTORY 18v batteries they all interchange.
I use Li-On, NiCad and NiMh interchangeably with my DeWalt 18v tools
You WILL need an adapter to use 20v batteries with 18v tools, said adapter is available from DeWalt
DO NOT ATTEMPT to open any LiOn battery pack for any reason, or to add Lithium batteries to a NiCad battery pack
I have had very good luck/experiences with DeWalt LiOn batteries and highly recommend them IF USED properly with the PROPER CHARGER
post pictures of what you have or at least list the model numbers off of the tools, charger and batteries

Please post pic of what you are attempting to do.

Geo, you made me go out to the shop to see what model DeWalt 18 volt drill I have.
Me and my short memory. It's not 18 volt it's 20 volt.
I had bought a bare 18 volt side grinder, and planed to share the drill motor and charger batteries with the bare 18 volt grinder. But when I got home the new grinder used Ni Cad battery, and my drill motor uses a lithium battery.
Problem sovled. I'll just return the 18 volt Ni Cad side grinder, and swap it for a bare 20 volt lithium side grinder.

Thanks guys for the help.
