Looking for suggestions for a small 12 volt air compressor. Just something to keep in the barn, where there is no power for my big compressor, just to pump up the lawnmower tires and such. Doesn't need to pump up the tractor tires, well maybe the fronts occasionally. My last one didn't make it a year, and it lets air out of the tire faster than it can put it in.

Have you considered a portable air tank. Fill it with your real compressor and it can be used anywhere. As a bonus it can be used on a wagon or a tractor that does not have a 12 volt battery.

The Viair compressors are good. Some can even put out over 2 CFM, but they're spendy. Lots to choose from on Amazon. And I like the idea of an air tank, but you have to make sure it never leaks air.

Another nice thing about a decent 12v compressor is knowing that you have a high-quality compressor in your car (or your wife's car) that can not only air up a low tire if needed, but do it quickly. Can't tell you how many times I've seen people take their spare tire out and it was way low on air.

I've had good luck with the $25 compressors, one is over 15 years old and still works well.

For small tires a hand pump can work well and can be good exercise LOL. This week Aldi has 140 psi manual bike tire pumps with pressure gauge on sale for $10.

John I got 2 from Menards about 5 years ago, don't remember the brand but they still work good. have 2 vans keep 1 in each. Grandsons keep their lawnmower and bike tires air'd up.

John, several in the RV community with those huge Motorhomes like this Viair unit:

HOWEVER if you don't need one that big and still a 12 VDC compressor, there are much cheaper ones out there

12 VDC Air Compressors

Look up "VOLTAIRE"air compressers. It is a stand alone unit(-battery)motor with belt driven compresser,Can run 50minutes out of 60.I have had one with 20 gal.tank for20 yrs on trailer for tractor pulling and has no problem keeping up on rear tires. It works just like a normal 110-220 unit, only 12 or now 24 volt is aval. Made in Neb.

Thank you for your suggestions, well except maybe the bicycle pump, lol. I was using an air tank, and I still would be but the whole point is to eliminate going back and forth to the barn, not to mention with my luck, it will leak out. I do like the looks of the Viair, and they do have good reviews on them, so that's probably what Ill go with. Thanks again.

John,
I have a two 12v compressors, don't remember the model, but I wouldn't recommend buying them. Takes forever to air up a small tire and if your mower tire has come off the rim, good luck using a 12v compressor.

I have an air compressor in my garage for car/truck tire. It a cheapie $99 Hf special. If I need portable air, I just air up the tank. I think it about 8 gallons, not sure. Easy to put in back of truck or Kaw mule. The tank can usually get the job done.

Ive had 2 12 volt pumps in the last 12 - 13 years. The first one gave me good service for most of those years. If I needed to do anything other than a mower tire then I grabbed my air tank, and just drove whatever I needed to air up to the compressor. The 12 volt ones, I hook them up to the mower battery, and in a couple of minutes I'm done. THe last one lasted me less than a year. Its more of a convenience for me to have it at the barn, rather than lugging around air tanks back and forth to the barn to air up a small tire.

I have an older portable air compressor, about 20 gallons. Also a small carry tank. I put both into the Polaris Ranger, have them plumbed together with quick connectors, and it makes it a portable air station. Can drive to any outlet, fill both tanks, and go. Recently pumped up the front tire (18.4x26) on the JD 4450 MFWD when it was parked in a shed with no electricity. Aired it up well enough in one trip, to drive it to the shop, where the 60 gal compressor is.

I got an inflator for Christmas that uses the 19.2 V batteries that all my other Craftsman tools use. I can set the pressure(It is digital) and turn it on. When it reaches the preset pressure it stops. It works very well on the riding mower tires or car tires. It takes longer on larger tires naturally but batteries last long enough to do most tires.

See what you can find at Walmarts or Kamarts. They usually have 12 volt inflators that work off a car battery. I keep one in our car

I wouldn't go too cheap, I have a couple, one in each vehicle, the $35 one works well.
The $8 from HF works, but It's slow and I don't expect it to last too long, although it aired up bicycle tires all last winter in AZ. When it fails I will replace it with a better one.

Slime model 40026 is a 12 volt 2 cylinder. I have owned one for nearly a year and used it a few times, and very happy with it. Prices vary from $72 to $149. Best price I have seen for one was on Amazon.

Knowing that they are slow, I buy the ones that you can to set to turn off at the pressure needed. Then you can start it pumping up a tire, and walk away.
