Getting bugged by bugs??

Hey all. Have been trying to find something to help combat not only the horrendous skeeters we get here, but also the ticks and black flies that will be worse then normal this year. I happened across a video that mentioned a product, and his example is truly impressive. Here's the link to the video:

Now, the Sawyer product he was testing is fairly expensive, so I ran across another video of a guy who was buying concentrated Permethrin in bulk and mixing his own. However, that was a VERY boring video, so will save you the agony. The one good point of that boring video was that this guy told the product he bought, and it cost him like $34. The same "exact" stuff is available on Amazon for $22! In the Reviews section of that page is also ratios for how to properly mix.

Rather than writing out all the instructions, I'll let that first link tell you how it works. Next week I'll be getting my bottle of concentrate and will happily share my experiences here. If this stuff works half as well as they say it does, WOW!! Anyway, here's the link to the product on Amazon:

One thing I'll mention here is that Permethrin is NOT meant for on-skin use. It simply will not work. However, if sprayed on fabric and allowed to dry, your clothes are supposed to repel skeeters, ticks, black flies and more for UP TO 6 washings! Some say no more than 1 or 2 washings. From what I understand, it's the agitation that breaks down the bond on the clothing.

Not supposed to mess with this stuff or get it on your skin when wet, but is "supposed" to be safe when dry. At this point, if it can help keep the biting wildlife off me, I'll gladly accept those risks.

I've been using this stuff for years...get it from TSC at a 10% solution. Has been the only thing I've ever found to be truly effective against ticks. Your Amazon solution is quite a bit stronger so I'll be curious to hear what you mix your solution at.

As I said, one of the reviews at the bottom of the Amazon page tells the mixing ratios. The Sawyer brand is set for 0.5% strength, which means this stuff gets diluted a lot.

That is what they told us in nam. This stuff will kill bugs, plants, animals and trees. But it wont hurt you. I would be careful with the mixture.

Billy, thanks for chiming in. Always a pleasure sir! Is actually good to hear that this chemical has been used going that far back. That means there's been lots of time to try to key in on the proper amount for effective use, hopefully without it being "too" much.

When we first moved here to the wilderness, we happened upon a small drug store not far away (*laughing* ....EVERYTHING'S far away here!!) that had 40% Off on clearance. Was such a great deal we bought them out! Ended up dousing ourselves with so much DEET over the neat 2 Summers that I seriously think it caused some sort of problems for us. The skeeters were so bad here that while in the house, it was hard to sleep with the loud and constant buzzing out the window one very skeeter-active night! And ticks? I lived in rubber boots during that time, so only had a few ticks that fell on me. But the wife had them all the time!

As the majority of exposure is the lightweight clothing of Summertime, am very much hoping their effectiveness claims hold up out here. According to the video link above, seems they might - at least concerning skeeters and black flies anyway. So gonna give this stuff a shot. Also bought some Repel Lemon Eucalyptus Oil for treating the skin areas as we're trying to avoid DEET altogether.

Seems kinda amazing to me that this can treat clothing and actually last through a few wash cycles, yet is just now getting really popular. So in that sense, I still have a small amount of apprehension about the stuff. However, lots of big plans on things to do this year, so need to try "something"! Nearly anything has to be better than getting eaten alive by these dad-blasted bugs though!!

Just wanted to warn you. Because thousands like me are paying for the use of chemicals like that. DEET is another problem chemical.

Well, got a LOT of work to do this year. I don't have a shop to work in, so waiting for cooler weather means waiting for snow. Is too dang easy to lose things in the snow, and too hard to keep the fingers working when touching steel.

Once I get my project done, I'll be able to use it to build my dream shop - modified straw bale construction. But for now, gonna have to go with one of them thar evils to keep them buggers away!

Modified straw bale construction? Are you considering using flax straw? I would think you"re not too far away from flax country. FarmShow had a story about a guy who used big squares for a machine shed.
