I need help understanding npt, I purchased a couple of 1/8 npt replacement gauges for tire chucks. They do don't seem to fit in the 1/8 npt fitting on the chuck. I checked the fitting with a 1/8npt tap and all fit perfectly. Then i took a 1/8 npt die tried on the gauge and it wouldn't even start on. My questions is should die start on a npt like die for bolt thread would? thanks Chuck

Actually the NPT dies should start easier than a bolt thread due to the taper, you need to pay attention to which side of the die is which. Sounds like you either got the wrong gauges or a typical China quality control problem.

It is funny I bought some pipe fittings from Home Depot a while back and they were made in India. I could finger tighten them all the way down and almost pull them back out of the nipple

Hi thanks for the quick replies, they are from the land of almost right as you guys guessed. I did try the die both ways still no luck. I measured with a mic and it a few hundredths over spec. I'll run the die over it after filing the end on the threads and give it shot. only about 5 bucks for one so we will try.

Being tapered they can have different diameters . Taps and dies are different sizes in the same pitch . You need a pipe tap and die collection that varies in the same written size. Sometimes it is running a die on the male thread ,sometimes a tap in the hole to remove some material allowing the thread to seat deeper.

Heres what I had to do, redrilled and went deeper and retapped the hole and with force to get it started it caught and screwed all the way in. There didn't like there was any taper on either until retapped them. lack of any taper on the gauge seem to enhance the problem. Everything works as it should now thanks for your help. Chuck

What you need are a thread gauges. NTP, metric of various pitches and standard thread course and fine. Then you can easily determine what you have both male and female and figure out the problem and find a solution before you force in a nipple and screw up the threads in both parts.
