High electric bills-meter to check usage

Can you elaborate on what's happening?

Sudden spike in usage?

Your electric provider can pull records of past usage, do some comparisons. If the meter was recently replaced that can be questioned, especially if it's a commercial application.

For individual 120 volt appliances or other items get a "Kill A Watt" available for about $20 to $25 from many online sources or perhaps Ace Hardware.

Those do work and are pretty good. I have one. But if you really want an accurate reading. It will take lab type equipment, which the power company should have.

A clip on Ammeter and an ordinary voltmter will provide data to calculate volt amps but not watts. Unless the load is 100% resistance .

Years ago my local electric company would loan you a meter sort of thing that you could hook up to things to trace down what was pulling more power then it should so you might check with them before shelling out any $$

at my co-op we had several of the kill a watt testers we would loan to consumers, also had a couple power monitors we could connect to the panel circuits and record usage for several days to find a usage problem.

(quoted from post at 08:34:17 04/26/17) I need recommendation for a instrument to check electricity usage?

I have used a device called Efergy E2.

I doubt it's perfectly accurate, but each month it was within a few percent of my meter reading.

The software was OK, but not great. Recently it quite updating properly, not sure if it's a software or hardware problem.

I now use it just to know real time electric usage. This lets me know when a pump is running, a heater got left on, etc.

I use it to monitor whole house usage, but you could clamp it to other wires and monitor individual circuits.

By the way, I didn't pay that price. And it looks like maybe my model has been replaced with a newer model.

And, the normal disclaimer, this was my experience. I make no guarantees of any one else's experience.
