One rant, one rave

Rant. Broke my last shear bolt on the Bush-Hog and have been to three places (Rural King, Southern States, and a local repair shop, nobody has any. Heading to TSC on Saturday. Last time I needed some everyone had them. It is a Squealer SQ600.

Rave, was looking for a thermostat for my IH 424 and not having any luck, walked in NAPA on a hunch, kid (20 something) looked it up, went to the shelves, came back with just what I needed for $11. In and out in two minutes.

Simple metric bolt. Grade is a number on the edge of the hex. ^.4, 8.8, 19.5 are typical numbers. Your old bolt will have the number stamped, do not use a higher grade of bolt. Jim

Good luck at T-ough S--t C-harlies for a farm part. They might have some horse items, or a Chinese tool or something you can use so the trip isn't wasted.

I found out that the lower grade of bolts work better than the higher. The higher the tensile strength the more brittle the bolt and the more it's subject to "shear shock". I used to use grade 5 or better and always had a snapped bolt and couldn't find the shaft hole to drive out the remnants there.

Read up on the subject and started using grade 2 and a locking nut that left a little slack in the bolt...nut not touching the clevis. Problems with bolts disappeared and when I did shear one it was a smear and I could find the hole in the shaft part.

On my Round baler, mother deere spec'd grade 8, ?" bolt protecting a 1" or so shaft. Never sheared but it goes against what I just said about mowers.
