blasting cabinet

I am looking for a blasting cabinet. I don't want a cheap unit but don't want to break the bank, either. I am familiar with the Skat Blast cabinets and want something like that or better. Any suggestions? Thanks. Mike

I have a skat blast 960. I've had it for probably 5 years or so and no issues at all.

Anyone who comes in my shop usually comments on it.

I have done nothing to it other than replace consumables and sand. Depending on what I'm working on I usually go thru 50-100 lbs of sand a year.

Also if you buy their cabinet tp tools customer service is great! I'm close enough to drive and any time I had a question in the store they were extremely helpful.

Just buy the HF unit. The stuff you're blasting won't know or care that you didn't buy the $1000 option.

I bought the HF unit 15 years ago, it works. I added a couple of lights in the cabinet so I could see what was going on.

A squirrel cage fan to exhaust the dust out of it.

You really have to be brain dead to blow $1000 on a blast cabinet...

I have a scat blast 960 also. It has been a good cabinet and you can get all the supplies you need for it from Tip. Needs 15 CFM at 90 psi to work.

You may want to consider building your own. Easy and inexpensive to do and you can make it the size you need. You just need some 2by's, plywood, a couple of panes of glass a light fixture and a good shop vac. for the cabinet. The pickup tube, foot pedal, gloves and nozzle don't cost much. I built a 6' wide one several years ago and it works as well as any store bought unit and it only cost me about $400 total. People tend to think that they need to be made of metal, but the plywood works just fine. Mine gets used a LOT and the wood has held up just fine.

Mine is wide a guess 40" maybe 48 but only 24" deep. If I every buy another it will be 30 to 36" deep... It is mounted to a standard pallet and it uses it all length wise I have forks on my tractor and can move it around

your post reeks of ignorance. You have likely never used a skat blast cabinet, but want to come on here and tell someone like me that I'm braindead for spending my money on it?

First, the skat blast cabinet that is even remotely close to the harbor freight is $550 not $1000. Second, once you get into the larger cabinets, they come with a vacuum that costs over $200 itself.

I actually have seen a HF in use to compare to my cabinet and I would build my own before I bought one of theirs.

comparing the 2 cabinets is like comparing a Honda Civic to a Bentley- they both are technically a car, but that's really all they have in common.

I built my own. Run the hose from the pressure pot in the side. I recycle the sand twice then toss it. Drywall bags work great in the shop vac to contain the dust.

Not sure where you live but there is a place just East of downtown Indianapolis called Greg Smith Equipment that sells automotive service equipment and they have the best value in blast cabinets that I have seen.

I built my own from salvaged plywood, some 2x4s, and plexiglass. The factory made units in the size and quality I wanted are all over-priced, and the smaller units in my price range were still over-priced for what I was getting.

A shop vac removes the dust, and a re-purposed porch light provides illumination.

Trumans has a set of plans to make a fairly large cabinet from plywood . I believe it takes one sheet. You'll need to buy the gloves ,the window and some electrical supplies . It can fit a car cylinder head. I made one [ actually my Dad made the box ,I welded up the legs] and it works good.

I built my own, got the kit with gloves, hose/ nozzle, plans and window from NT I think. They have replaceable clear acrylic sheets for the windows, need those!
You can either do the front or side door, I did both.
Bathroom fan blowing in (pressure) bag on the exhaust side.
