Are reading glasses a tool?

As I've gotten older, my eyes have changed. As a kid I was nearsighted. Now I need reading glasses to see up close.

Recently had an eye exam and found out I need +1.5 for left eye and a +2.5 for right eye. My insurance covered exam, $20 co-pay on frames and $20 co-pay on lenses. So I ordered just one pair of readers.

I was wondering has anyone made their own readers by purchasing two identical cheapie readers from dollar store, one with a +1.5 and another +2.5 and making your own readers?

I plan to put spare readers in tool box.

A good many of the cheapy's as you say are around $12 to $15 a pair around here and the frames are made so the loops the lenses are mounted in do not come apart, no screws. They also do not have screws in the side bows and are riveted instead. No more changing bows. I do not see the savings if you need two pair to make one every time you need to replace.

I buy ALL my 2.5 readers at Dollar Tree for a buck so if I drop loose or break them (so often lol) I'm not out much PLUS they serve the same purpose as expensive readers other then poor quality causing breaks now n then but at that price I'm wayyyyyyyyyyy ahead.

If I required different lenses for each eye Id do EXACTLY as you spoke of and keep several pairs lying around.

John T Also a frugal conservative "tightwad" lol

With all the messing around with batteries that you do you should probably have a pair of prescription safety glasses. If a battery ever blows up in your face it could be bad. The longer you put off wearing prescription glasses the harder it will be to adapt. I started wearing them at about 40 when I could no longer read the size on small taps and drills. We had to wear safety glasses at all times anyhow and the company paid for them.

In my garage they are a tool ! Like some of the others I buy dollar store glasses and they work fine. My first glasses were $200 plus and I broke them constantly, got tired of that and bought cheapies with which I see just as well !

Vast majority of people start life being farsighted and progress to the nearsighted range. Very rare someone would start nearsighted and switch to farsighted. From your prescription, you appear to be near sighted in the left eye, close to zero in the right. You have old eyes or presbyopia which is different from either farsighted or nearsighted. You can switch lenses but why? Get a some +1.50 glasses. That will focus the left eye for reading distance and leave the right eye slightly under corrected. You likely will not notice the under correction with both eyes open but the under correction will give a greater range of focus than correcting both eyes exactly for reading distance. Poor man's version of a trifocal.

Wife watched a movie recently with Sally Field in it - apparently a strange movie. Anyway, I walked in at one point and saw Sally wearing 2 pair of glasses at once - the first just to see with and the 2nd for reading. *lol* Was a 2015 or 2016 movie. Don't remember the name, but apparently has been a long time since [i:3066638017]Smokey and the Bandit[/i:3066638017]!

Yes you can. At some of the flea markets they have Boxes of 1.25,1.50, 1.75, 2.00, 2.50, 3oo etc. You need to find the boxes that have just been put out on display and they will all be from the same manufacturer. Very carefully compare how they look. I have done it but you need to be very patient.

That's nice to know I can buy lenses in quarter steps. My new readers I had made I requested 1.25 and 2.25. Work GREAT. Thanks for the information.

Well add this to stranger. Dr says I have
monovision. Right eye needs +.50 left eye
needs a -.50 for distance vision. One eye is
near other is farsighted.

Just order the correct ones from zennioptical.com
I have bought from them several times. Really inexpensive glasses that work.

Been wearing them for at least 30 years I like Walgreens 3 pair for $10/12 a pair will last me a good year. Best part they don't leave a green mark on yer gord... I just push them up on my forehead when not needed and keep on trucking...

My Cousin was just telling that he had done that the other day. He Got both power glasses from Dollar Tree to keep the cost down.

As far as glasses being a tool: They are the first thing I get out of the tool box when I walk in the shop where I work every morning, And they make it possible for me to fix things, so I guess they ARE a tool.
