Seeking suggestions for gardening tool as a gift

This weekend the family will be celebrating birthdays for my sister and for my nephew?s wife. Both of them always give my wife and me well considered, interesting, useful presents. We would like to return the favor, but we have trouble coming up with things they would care about. Both of them are avid gardeners, so a useful gardening tool would be a good choice. The trouble is, both of them are in circumstances where they can easily buy themselves whatever they need, and we don?t know what they may have already. Can you offer any ideas for a gardening related tool or piece of equipment which is out of the ordinary, but which you have found to be especially useful? Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.

couple odd tools i use in the garden ,, one is a scuffling or stirrup hoe for weeding, works great on new sprouted weeds, full grown pigweed ect. other is a hori-hori garden weeding knife. real handy too. both are not expensive at all.

Take a look at the Gardening section of the Lee Valley Tools website. They have some beautiful gardening hand tools - pruners, trowels, etc. - that are keepsake quality.

Another neat item is a Rogue hoe (or Prohoe is another name), made from recycled disc blades.

Oops, I just noticed your post said "this weekend", so it's probably too late to order from a website. (Can't edit posts.)

that should read not good on full grown stuff like pigweed. also sharpen both sides of the hoe, you work them back and forth and they ride just under the surface cutting off the weeds below ground. once you get the hang of it , you can move along real quick.

My dad always had this dandelion puller . It looked like a cane but on the bottom looked like bunch a nails hanging off a washer and when you pulled a lever on the handle the nails would twist around the dandelion root and pull the whole root up and out of the ground. It was circa 1960s and I have not seen another but it worked. Also most gardeners love Irises so some Iris ryzomes they can plant and enjoy year after year.

How about a subscription to Greenprints "Weeders Digest". I have no connection but have heard some of the stories on the radio. If they already get it maybe you could renew for them.

Well there is one gardening tool that I would love to have and not too many seem to have them. It is something every gardener would want --- an edger. These can really save you hours of time trimming and cleaning-up shrub-bed edges and walkways, especially if you have alot of borders to keep weeded and neat. Not a cheap gift however at $100-1000 and up.

Give them a gift card to a store in there area that sells garden supplies. That way you won't get them something that they already have or don't need or ever use.

I really like the upside down tomato thing. Put up to 3 plants plus a couple of herbs in it and no weeding. Works great for me just needs more watering than those grown in dirt. I keep one up by the house and have tomatoes are year long right out the door.

I suggest an Easy-Plant Jab Planter from Johnny's Selected Seeds in Maine . The price is cheaper on the internet than in

their catalog. Great for planting large seeds without having to bend-over.

get a hori hori knife best hand tool you can get for gardening. Few different makes out there. google you will see

Thanks for all the good ideas. I'm not going to reveal which one (or two) I'm going to get because they're all great suggestions, and I appreciate all of them.
