Well thanks for all the replies. I have decided to try propane and realize it has its limitations. If I don't like it, all I will be out is the cost of a tip. I always have propane for the grill and camper so it does make sense. I will also keep a bottle of acetylene on hand in case I want it. I check out the petrogen website as mentioned in one post. Would love to have that too but way out of my league for how much I use them ! I believe the basic core kit was around 2300 bucks through allhandsfire.com !

Yeah I have heard that also ! Thanks ! Out of curiosity I always my acttylene tank was an s. Maybe ws ? Holds just under 130 cu. Ft. And is waist high. Not knee high as posted below by rod.

You did the right thing going to propane. I figure it would arouse dis-agreement if explained here so I'll suggest you ask pros somewhere such as WeldingWeb about drawing acetylene from a small cylinder while useing rosebuds or other large tips. As mentioned by someone in your other thread, don't even try welding with propane,it doesn't shield worth beans.

I think you will like it. As I stated below, I have a Harris on Propane. The rest of the story: My dad bought it in the early 50s and we immediately started using it, with acetylene, to cut scrap iron. Dad had a salvage and we used it a lot. Very quickly it got converted to propane due to the gas cost. We were going through 2-3 big bottles of it in a long days work.

I'll tell you this: If it wasn't up to the job or too costly, Dad wouldn't have used it up until '90 when I got it! He watched costs like a hawk!
