reversing flow of air through chipper radaitor

Can you just flip fan blade over to reverse air flow through a chipper rad. ? I had a Vermeer chipper with Perkin Diesel that had a reverse air flow. So the fan blows air from engine side of rad. to outside machine. Worked great and rad. never plugged up with sawdust and chips. I am working on a Brush Bandit with 6 cy Chry. engine. Wondered if I turn fan over it would do the same thing. Thanks for any help.

Flipping the fan blade over will only slow the air flow but will not change the direction of air flow. To change the direction of air flow you have to get a reverse flow fan blade. We do did a test of that way back when I was in high school science class and flipped the blade on a common house fan and all that happened was air flow decreased

Hello Steve-Maine,

Tow motors also have a fan that pushes the air from the engine side. It is called a pusher fan. You would need to change rotation, besides reversing the blade. Scribe a directional arrow the way it is turning now. That is the rotation you need to drive the fan when it when you reverse it. I think it will work then, Guido.

No, you have to get a different fan blade.

But if you do, remember to keep a close eye on the inside of the radiator. Chances are it will still pick up enough fine stuff to clog it, just where you can't see it.

Most forklifts use reverse fans, just to keep the operator from getting the hot seat. But as clean of an area most operate in, the inside of the radiator will quietly cake up with oily dirt, has to be pressure washed periodically.

Did the same on an automotive fan. Not good result.
My late father-in-law's tractor come to me with reversed fan. No wonder it had cooling issues.

Put on an electric fan (cheap and easy) Taking the original fan off leaves room. Select one that is sized to the radiator. Jim

Reverse flow fans are available at auto parts stores and wrecking yards. Many vehicles use ccw rotation and you can put them on backwards so they blow away from the engine. Need a good shroud blowing either way.

most old tracked dozers and loaders had reversible fan blades. just push the blade in and turn it until it popped out, keep ya warm in the winter.

Some of the old N ford tractors had a special fan blade they called a pusher blade. I don't think reversing a blade will work.
