Ferrite tube

Can someone please explain the purpose of the Ferrite ' cotton reel' you find in a plastic tube at the end of some electronic equipment's leads ?

They vary from an inch to almost two inches in length and are held in place and covered by a plastic snap together shroud .
I am assuming it has something to do with interference suppression but wonder if they can be safely removed in order to pass cables through small holes .

The one at radio shack can be removed and snapped back on. The molded
ones like on a high price charger for a camera or phone cannot. They
are ment to smooth out any ac ripple from the power supply for
sensitive electronics.

Actually, they act as a "low pass filter", filtering out HIGH frequencies, essentially turning it to HEAT!
