just wondering how wireless internet works,,what can be used with this setup, phone, computer etc. thanks

We use Verizon at our cabin, the cell tower is 4 miles away on the other side of a rock ridge, so we don't have the strongest signal. Because the cabin has a steel roof and siding, we installed a WeBoost system, it has an outside antenna and an amplifier and inside antenna. Then we use a smartphone or ipad to create a hotspot, it works great but we have a limited no of gigs. At home we have Midcontinent cable.

Hello cb,

Only thing you need is a wireless router. Here is mine. Wireless devices will receive internet with password. Tv, phone, tablet. Mine can be on all at the same time streaming video. Mine was free from Verizon. Lights from the top are: power internet, dsl, wireless. And another light comes on for the hard wired computer. This post is from my tablet, including the picture,

Guido.

Hello cb,

Forgot to mention that you can also use a blue ray dvd player that has wireless capabilities to go on the internet, with a wireless router, and it works with older analog tv too,

Guido.

Finally, a question that I'm "more" than qualified for! *LOL*

We have Verizon and live too far out to get a land line phone - unless we wanna shell out several thousand $$ for them to bring the phone line out this far. Was just under $10k for that about 10 years ago.

Our nearest Verizon tower is 30 miles away, so we always had a "fun" time of trying to get a signal. A couple years back, the gov't (don't know which one - state maybe?) put up a repeater tower 8 miles south of us. We suddenly noticed one day that we no longer had to stand on our heads in the south-facing window to get cell reception. It was awesome!

Not too long after that my Dad passed away and the wife had to make a long journey (1,100+ miles) by herself, so she bought one of them there so-called "smart phones". We discovered that we were getting internet on the thing. Over time, the signal kept getting better and more reliable. Finally got to a point where our old phone box batteries died and, wouldn't you know, can't get new batteries - only an entirely new box!

With our newly-discovered internet (still quite unstable), I asked in the store about this little box, which was brand new at the time:
https://www.amazon.com/Novatel-Verizon-Broadband-Router-T1114/dp/B00JL57PMG
Ended up getting it free. The phone line was still the same $20/month and was voice only. Wife's "dumb" phone had 0.5gig data allowance. We later learned (no easy thing to do nowdays!) that we could hook up a computer to the new phone box, so we did that and were now able to have email and such, but I really had to torque down on the PC to keep it from doing ANYTHING without my express permission. I eventually upgraded to 3gig/month, then to 6gig. Just last month (about when I became a member here), Verizon had a new program that, for $4 more than what we were paying, we could now have unlimited internet with the first 10gig being 4G and the rest 3G. Yeah, right! The best we can ever hope for way out here is 3G!

So, how's it work? Great!! We have a Samsung Blu-Ray player that the wife streams movies with. At the same time, I can usually be downloading YouTube videos while simultaneously watching other videos, and even be recording other videos on the laptop, all using 3G. Yes, sometimes we have a hiccup way out here, as use of the tower gives priority to any emergency communications that need the tower, glitches in the system, etc. We also have a selectable wired or wi-fi printer which doesn't actually do anything online, but uses the above modem to communicate with the PC's in the house. The wife can even use her dumb phone in the bedroom (or wherever) rather than having to hold the phone while doing yoga in the south-facing window.

We're not sure but I think we can also "surf the web" to a degree using the Blu-Ray player, but it's rather cumbersome.

Now, last year, I also bought a weBoost cellular booster, thinking it might help with reception. Nope, no better. The problem wasn't the reception, but the very remote tower still getting adjusted and dialed in just right.

Even though this is a "data modem with voice", I'm not certain that I can make or receive faxes with it. But then, there are other ways of sending information nowdays. Am I pleased? Yep, no longer have to worry about data usage, but will still keep the PC locked down as I like knowing what it's doing. Gives me a sense of control for SOMETHING in my life! *LOL*

You might of read my post about having a weboost, we found that antenna placement is not best where you would expect it to
be! I thought up on the TV tower would be best, but no, down under the soffit is best!

Are you inquiring about data (internet) over the cellular network or a WISP (wireless internet service provider)? They are two different critters, but get you to the same end game. A WISP is normally fixed point-to-point and on a microwave frequency which is a different frequency than cellular. A WISP will install an outdoor antenna at you location and there will be a modem or modem/router inside. It will then function the same as a wired ISP. Some WISP will use a mesh network, some will be direct. The people that I know who are on Logonix (Macomb, IL) are happy with their service. There is a new company installing WISP at Carthage, IL.

One more nice thing about our setup is, any time we go somewhere, we can take the router/modem box with us and use our unlimited internet with the laptop while away from home. If you have a power inverter, you can use in on the road. If the power goes out, you lose data (internet) connection but keep voice for a couple of days with its back-up battery.

And we got the box for free as (for us at that time) an upgrade.

My smartphone has wireless internet. Or smartphone can access internet via WiFi. My Tv can stream movies via WiFi using Apple Tv or Amazon Firestick. There are others too.

thanks for all the replies..the reason I am checking around. having difficulty with present service. I am using a cable co. for both phone and internet.. recently started having problems, with the phone, when making a call, I get the recorded message from the cable co. saying "this number is no longer in service, hang up and try again" I try again and the same thing happens..i can use cell phone and get the call through the first try. if I keep trying with the cable phone. it may sometimes go thru. cable co. said I needed new phones. same thing. no better. the cable co. recently tied in with google for some reason, didn't help...hope all ha in a great day,

Unless you live right close to a cell tower, it will never be as good as the cable internet, and won't be unlimited data like the cable internet.

I would keep after the cable company for a solution. They are counting on you to tuck your tail between your legs and live with the problems you are having. Get on their backs and don't let up until the problem is fixed.

That could be due to a number of things, but depending on where you're at, I would say that somewhere along the line is in the process of upgrading/updating their equipment and/or software. This can take a long time to work out. Might want to do some web searches if you think this might be the case.

Another possibility is some sort of interference due to some disaster somewhere, such as those wildfires, or .......?

And yet another possibility might be that some connection, "probably" more towards your end, could be getting moisture in it, cable might have been chewed into by rodents, lightening might have struck nearby and caused who-knows-what to happen, or any one of a dozen other possibilities.

Sounds like your cable company needs to get someone out there to check things out! But beware, if the problem is on your end, then the service call could end up costing you a bundle.

All said, I think the problem is most likely due to them trying to connect their older system to some newer Google system - like trying to attach the front half of a red tractor to the rear half of a green tractor. It can be done, but takes time. *LOL*

If they tied in with Google, that's good for you. Google is installing really high speed networks at low cost; something to do with getting more peeps on the internet so they get more ad money. Imagine that.

I got T-Mobile cell data only. $35 a month for 6gigs. 1mbps cause I'm 4 miles from the tower. It's 5mbps at the tower.

You can get hotspots on Ebay for $20 to run the whole house.

Barnyard, we now have unlimited data with Verizon (see post above). Also, I often get 1.3Mbps download speed on this PC, all while the laptop is streaming AND the Blu-Ray is streaming. We're 8 miles from a repeater tower and 30 miles from the nearest Verizon tower.

Our house in a very rural area has wireless internet. It was Millenicom when we started and then got taken over by Verizon. Nearest tower is 7 miles away and it works fine with a rooftop antenna. We take it with us when we travel and it has worked just about anywhere I've gone. Middle of the NY Adirondacks and middle of the Michigan UP. Sometimes reverts to 3G or even 1X but I can usually get something. Most times I have 4G. I think it is amazing. Before we had wireless, we had a satellite dish with Hughesnet and it was awful.

well thanks a lot to all of you. I now find myself deeper in the hole. it may take a while,we have c-spire and Verizon here our town. i'll start with these and see what develops have a good nite

And it is only going to get faster. I can remember when a T1 line was super hot. Todays main feed fiber optic. The one burried along the road can zapppp through 17 thousand movies in one second. The capacity and tecnology just keep on going. I used to work on the original FAX machines that you put the special sheet of paper in and you would smell the fumes as the little needle would burn the image onto the paper as it spun on the little drum. A blinding FOUR, minutes per copy. I knew a guy in construction in 1988 who had one of those over the sholder cary case with battery cell phones. Looked like a US army field phone. Remember when you needed an antenna on your car so your cell phone would work on the road? Ahhh the good old days.

I have wireless internet through a local provider. I guess it would be a microwave setup like someone else mentioned. This one is 10 Mbit/sec which is fast enough to stream when it works right... Usually it's pretty good although the last couple weeks it's been having trouble.. It's effected by wind... and freezing rain. It's also limited by terrain to line of sight. However, given the options here... it's pretty good.
I also use a wireless hotspot from my phone to fill in sometimes.... but that is prohibitively expensive. I can easily use 2-3 gig per day without streaming on the tv... so price out 100 gig a month if you're contemplating that move....

I know the feeling. Seems like the more I learn about the electronic age, the more I realize that I don't even know what I thought I knew.

I just poke around until I find something that works and stay with it until it no longer works.
