Hello ,

Here is what I did. About 10 minutes to finish the starter reassembly, including making the u-clips,

Back in the 60's I would rebuild Chrysler gear reduction starters. The trick to getting them back together was using a cage that held the 4 brushes in place. When you pushed the rotor in, it pushed the cage out of the way.

Before auto zone came to town and offered a lifetime warranty, I rebuilt my starters and alternators. I'm spoiled, I always buy lifetime parts and no longer rebuild things I can buy.

Hello teddy52food,

There was some soldering involved as well. 5 years at the Dodge dealer gave me plenty of practice,

Guido.

The old GM alternators had a small hole in brush holder so you could put a small nail in hole to keep brushes in place. After you got the alternator together, remove the nail and brushes will rub on the slip rings.

It's possible Guido could have drilled small holes to keep brushes in place.

Hello Geo,

Back in the 60's I was Dodge dealer mechanic. Got plenty of practice on those starters and alternator. Use to use an A/C light bulb to check the fields. Some soldering required as welL. BTDT

Hello Geo,

My solution, if you bothered to read it, is simple, fast, and does not required further started disassembly. Picture is worth how nany words?
