Palm sander question

How do keep the stick on pads on the hook and loop sander? New to this machine. Menards had palm sanders $14 to $90, of course bought the inexpensive one and several grits of 3M pads. First try, the pad did not stay on long even though we were careful not force or tip on smooth oak. Do i/we need a more $$$$$ one or different pads. Don't like this machine as it is hard to turn on and off, but will use it for now, if the pads will stay on. Thanks for time and suggestions. Leo

I have had some luck getting them to stick better, on startup, if I place them on the sander then, using my hand wiggle the sandpaper to further embed the hook and loop together before trying to sand with it. Once you get it started the vibrations of the sander should further embed the hook and loop together.

velcro (hook and loop) and adhesive are two different animals. If your sander has velcro, then you need discs with the felt backing. If your sander has rubber bottom, then you need the adhesive discs.

Do not use stick on pads with hook and loop sanders. I personally like the hook and loop much better. Very easy to change grits and
reuse sandind disks.

I changed the pad on my electric hook and loop twice. When the dumb thing started to not hold the last time I put the pad on for the stick on sanding discs. The peel off back sanding discs are much cheaper buying them on large rolls. I have only used a couple dozen stick on discs since changing the pad. The air powered one I bought at the time I changed the pad on my electric has the stick on type pad. I haven't used it on wood.

When I went looking for a new palm sander, I noticed that some had deeper (longer) hooks on the pads than others. I bought the sander with the deepest hooks on the pad and used discs with felt backing. No problems with the disc staying on.

Someone gave me a palm sander once because the discs wouldn't stay on. I spent a half hour cleaning the sawdust and dust out of the hooks on the pad; now it holds disc like it is supposed to.

The hook and loop sander you will have to have hook and loop paper. The PSA discs won't work on it. For someone that only has one sander the hook and loop is more convenient. You can change paper and reuse the sanding disc if the grit is good. The PSA discs you pretty much ruin them to remove them from the sander. I like the PSA discs better myself but I have a different sander for each grit I use. When I take a disc off it goes in the trash.

Well duh! Thanks every one....I was in too much of a hurry and bought the stick on pads instead of the hook and loop kind. Face a bit red. Leo
