Hobart Welder

Does anyone have any experience with a Hobart Ironman 230 mig welder? like the ones they have at farm supply stores.? thanks for any help

I don't own one, and I haven't used one, but I've heard very good things about them. I have a Hobart Stickmate AC/DC stick welder which has served me well. I have experience with Lincoln 225 AC/DC stick welders, and I find them slightly more reliable than my Hobart, but not enough to make me get rid of the Hobart and keep the Lincoln on any of the several opportunities I've had to do so.

Hobart is not owned by Miller, as is often claimed. Both are owned by another company, the name of which escapes me right now. Not that it makes much difference. Hobart has become, in effect, the less expensive end of the Miller line. Whether the quality is lower is debatable. Forty or more years ago, Hobart was one of the major manufacturers of high quality welding equipment in America.

The Hobart farm supply welders are decent, but lower tier machines than their blue cousins. The windings are usually aluminum, the transformers are tapped (step control) instead of variable, in general just less extras. They weld fine, and will hold up well for the average user. The only thing I didn't like about the Ironman I've used is that the weld puddle is very fluid. It makes for a very nice weld flat with not much practice, but is hard to weld vertical or overhead with.

Hobart is made by Hobart. They are not owned by another company. Miller Electric was purchased in 1993 by ITW out of Chicago from the hier of the company. It started in 1929. Hobart started in 1917 and is celabrating thier 100 year anniversary.

crwilson might know something I don't, but I used to work for a large welding supply company, and I was told that Hobart is owned by Miller. Most of the Hobarts were similar to the older model Millers, and were good welders. I have owned both and had good luck with both brands. I have had bad luck with Lincolns. Like some one said Hobarts lack some added features but weld good.

Here is a paragraph I copied from the Hobart Brothers Company website and pasted below. It was from a page titled History of Hobart from the section About Us.

"Hobart Brothers was family-owned and operated until its acquisition by Illinois Tool Works (ITW) in 1996. ITW is a multinational manufacturer of a diversified range of value-adding and short-lead-time industrial products and equipment, and is also the parent company of Miller Electric Mfg. Co., Bernard, Tregaskiss and Jetline"

It has been a few years, but the president of Miller was at one of our meetings. He said they built Hobart, and we would never(that is a long time)see a Miller in a box store.

I've got one of the 240 Volt Hobart MIG machines, but I can't recall the model number off the top of my head.

I've bought mine used about 8 years ago and have used it on ALOT of projects from sheet metal to heavy plate, running .035 wire, and 75/25 mixed gas.

Other than changing the factory gun our for a Tweeco, which was just a personal choice, it's been a good one, and I have absolutely no complaints.

Hobart are decent machines, but anyone who thinks they are a seperate company has obviously been misled, if you order Hobart parts they come in Miller bags! Basically years ago when the big box stores came calling for welders to meet their price point Lincoln made lower end machines for this, Miller didn't want to dilute their industrial brand image and made the smart move to market these class machines under the Hobart name. Both the Hobart and small Lincoln machines are not what their industrial counterparts but they are great machines for their uses

I have a Iron Man, probably two years old. I've used it quite a bit, It ain't a regular heavy duty welder like in most shops, but I sure like it. Welded thick to thin and for the money Imo, I couldn't have done better.....Craig
