CNC Mill X axis switches

I got the brackets made to mount the limit switches for the X axis today.

Could not mount them because no metric bolt supplier open Sunday afternoon, so will paint and mount next weekend.

Please confirm my suspicions.

X axis is left to right, with bed all the way to right is home.
Y axis is back and front, with bed all the way forward is home.

Have not got to Z axis yet.

So 0,0 coordinates would be back left on part.

I am putting 3 switches on each axis, 1 home and 2 over travel that will be wired into ESTOP circuit.

CNC was before my machine shop days, but 0,0 for me used to be dead center. ...Can't remember how the Z-axis read on that old mill.

I don't understand this part. Why the need for an over travel switch? Wouldn't maximum travel be inserted into the program?

The over travel switch is a "just in case" failsafe.

Sometimes a servo can run away, shorted SCR, failed encoder, etc.

The switch probably won't keep it from slamming the table, but it might lessen the damage.

I'm very familiar with servos and steppers. If he had a 'runaway' (and if he knew where to place a limit switch to stop it in time) I doubt the damage to the table (at the end of travel) would be anything compared to the damage to the work piece or tooling.

I would also think that any kind of credible CNC "machining" type of program would have a user set overall speed limiting factor (even with the loss of an encoder) rather than a full power "race to point" function.

Its been a few years since I programmed but as I recall what you have is correct. Bed all the way right is X home, bed as far away from column is Y home, spindle all the way up is Z home.

It always helped me to remember +/- by thinking spindle movement, not table movement.
