Does anyone build a magnetic base, so I can use one of my drills that I have already paid for in it? I just can t justify $500.00 plus, for a drill I might use once a year.

I've never seen one...

Just not real practical to attach a hand drill because of the shape.

Might find something on Ebay, or a rental.

The big core bit drilling machines I used to work with had vacuum based rigs. If you add a rim all of the way around to a standard stand and add a simple thin rubber gasket. A vacuum cleaner with a hose hooked to it just might fit you needs.

What material are you drilling? Thickness? Orientation? Hole diameter?

There's often a way to improvise rather than using a magnetic drill.

You can l9ok on ebay and see what "core" drills look like. Not very complicated. A very tiny vacuum pump can hold an awful big item down rock solid.

Sure do, and I love mine, but they run about 800 bucks without the drill but well worth it. Kanetec magbore is the name, much lighter and more compact, work great for drilling truck frames and such

Number one son picked up one that was DOA from where he worked. I had it fixed and it really comes in handy. This one is set up for annular cutters. It will cut a nice hole and leave a net plug of steel from the bit. When you are boring holes in large flat bar or plate it is way better than a hand drill. The only problem are the expense of the cutters. It will break you heart and wallet when one breaks.

Man, if you can find a decent Mag drill for only $500 you should buy it. otherwise invest in a decent import drill press. I've a assortment of hand held power drills up to 1/2" after that is drill press time. If you don't live to far from a rental place that's probably your best bet. I occasionally need a medium size (45 lbs.) electric jack hammer for cutting out slots in concrete slabs floors. Those things are spendy as well and I just bite the bullet and go rent and hurry up and get it back. Yes, I put something out in gas and time, but don't have worry 'bout one friend/neighbors borrowing it. bjr

Mark, that is what I am looking for, but for that much money I will hire some one to do the work :) I found one on line for $300.00,add shipping and I will be around $400.00. I may have to talk my brother into a 50/50 split.
