Continental engine

I have a Miller Big 40 welder with a continental F-163 engine. The other day I was welding with it and all of a sudden it died. Changed plugs, distributor cap and rotor and it is still missing. Took the carb. off and it looks good no trash in it. I have fire to the battery side of the coil when I turn the switch on. I am at a loss as to what to do next. I put a petronix module with a new coil on it a few years ago. How do I know if the module is still good? Thanks

Remove the Pertronix, install the original style points and condensor, and then try it. If it runs, the Pertronix is bad.

Where are you checking spark? Start with the coil wire. If you have spark there, then you know the Pertonix is fine and there is an issue in the cap and rotor. If no spark? Just disconnect the wire from the coil primary that goes to the distributor. Then get a jumper wire and short out that coil terminal, off and on and see if you get spark. Check it direct from the coil wire. If you do, then you can assume the Pertronix unit is bad unless there is a broken wire or the distributor is not turning.

Review everything you changed.

Compare the cap and rotor closely to the old ones, keep in mind everything is aftermarket now, may be close but not exact.

Check for spark at the plugs, try to determine which cylinder(s) are not firing. Be sure the firing order is right, try switching plugs to see if the problem follows a bad plug. Plugs can be bad out of the box, also can be improperly gapped, fouled or damaged during installation.

I haven't seen a Petronix module partially fail, it's always been good or nothing. But, anything is possible, check all connections, check inside the distributor that all components are correct. When checking spark at the coil, should get a blue spark that will jump at least 1/2", checking spark at the plugs should get a spark of 1/4".

You might check that the distributor is actually turning when you crank the starter. The roll pin that holds the gear on the shaft has been known to fail.

Broken timing gears and chains, cams that snapped, anything involved with driving the distributor is suspect.

"Changed plugs, distributor cap and rotor and it is still missing." Is "still missing" a typo? So does it run now but just misfires? If that is the case did you check the plug gap before installing them? They can be mashed closed during shipping. Just a thought. If it still is not running period I agree with what other have posted. Check for fire at spark plug, pull out---plug on wire and hold plug base against metal and see if it is firing when cranking.
